Obama's Climate Change Folly

Obama's climate change bill is so loony it makes even his insane financial policy look like the work of a competent government. If the world's future is in the hands of politicians and scientists is there any hope at all for saving civilisation?

Obama's Climate Change Bill Today Barack Obama's much hyped climate change bill will be debated by Americas House Of Representatives.

As I understand it the climate change bill includes a cap and trade proposal. So we rich people get to buy up the carbon allowances of all the people who cook on fires made from dried camel dung. So we actually get to pollute more.

And then China and India (roughly a third of the world's population between them) say hey, your people all have cars, power showers, jacuzzis and plasma TVs, why shouldn't ours? And they fail to agree a joint policy in Copenhagen.

Meanwhile as the thawing of the permafrost in Siberia and Alaska accelerates, the loggers keep cutting down rainforests of the equatorial belt so we in the west can sit at tables made from rare hardwoods as we chomp on our steaks and burgers.....

Like other western leaders including Britain's Cordon Brown, Obama has been seduced by the siren song of scientists who are sure if they are just handed enough money they will be able to come up with a magic CO2 bullet and reverse or at least halt climate change. As always with the science lobby, the more rational people listen to their blandishments the more we are reminded of that old maxim about scientists: often in error, never in doubt. The supporters of scientific solutions to climate change would argue that a theory stands until it is disproved. That is a fine argument when indulging in academic debate in the faculty rooms of universities.

The problem is climate change needs rapid decisions not endless debate. We have wasted too many decades on the ludicrous and futile squabbles that go on between scientists already and in considering some of their crackpot schemes to tinker with the earths weather systems we have to realise these experiments cannot be tried out on a small scale under controlled conditions. Seeding rainclouds, spraying particles in the upper atmosphere or promoting algae blooms in the oceans all look promising on paper. We must bear in mind however the evidence that any of these things will work is purely based on theory, speculative equation solving. The consequences should the experiments go wrong are simply unimaginable, and climate change science has an almost zero success rate in predicting future climate events from past trends so a bookie would be giving very longs odds on their predicting anything correctly based on some equations in which made up data is used for the variables and constants.

Scientists are nothing if not arrested adolescents and obsessive wankers though. Their mindset will simply not entertain failure. And with people like Obama and Brown, both the equal of any scientist in terms of ill - founded arrogance, intellectual vanity and egomania, prepared to back any crackpot scheme that offers a quick fix so they can strut and pose and preen as they are acclaimed the saviours of civilisation, such is their hubris they are deaf to all cautions. Both men think if they wish a thing to be then it will be.

Brown's efforts to control CO2 emissions, not a guaranteed fix by any means, are based on covering the landscape with giant wind turbines. So when the wind doesn't blow we are sit shivering in the dark. Brown and his government show little interest in more realistic sustainable technologies because these, while offering a feasible, low risk energy source, are too long term to help Brown's government be re-elected.

Obama on the other hand, apart from supporting zero benefit schemes like biofuel is pinning all his hopes on a carbon trading system. The US Government will crate a market in CO2 emissions and nations that do not use all their allowance will be able to sell part of their allocation to more developed nations that exceed theirs. The next global crisis then would be due to dealers trading in notional toxic emissions as they traded in toxic debts and notional to cause the current one. Obama's climate bill, as insane as his economic policy, is like all his other policies just the wishful thinking of a man so lost in narcissism he has seldom set foot on Planet Reality.

Labour's Minimum Wage Scam
When you hear of a Conservative politician praising Labour for creating a 'flexible job market' that benefits British employers it does not ring true. What Lord Freud was really praising the government for was letting bosses screw their workers by turning a full time job into a part time job. Not the sort of jobs policy you expect from Labour but we're always said they are more Tory than the Tories.

Authoritarian Box Ticking Culture.
Among the things that have alienated people from the Labour party apart from generakl incompetence, is their arrogant and patronising conviction the public are resady to believe anything the government tells them so long as it is dressed up in statistics and delivered by some fresh faced, smooth talking Labour spinmeister. It is very like the authoritarian regime of Orwell's 1984

Teen Binge Drinking Crisis
Politicians, medical experts and church leaders here in Britain are panicking about the binge drinking antics of teenagers. All around the country young people are getting rat-arsed and behaving in an offensive and embarrassing way. Change You Can't Believe In
by James Dahlberg
For his first contribution to The Daily Stirrer James looks at how the popularity of Barack Obama, the Yes We Can" man has collapsed from the record levels seen right after his inauguration as President to the latest polls that make him the most unpopular president ever after a year in office. The economy, unemployment, the disatrous health reform bill and weakness on foreign polcy have played a big part but how much is due to the failings of man himself.

Massive Overdose Protest
by Ian R. Thorpe

Te Merseyside Skeptics Society (or more accurately the selective Skeptics Society as they only seem to be skeptical about what it is fashionable to be skeptical about) are going to protest about himeopathy today by gathering outside Boots Chemist, Liverpool and taking massive overdoses of homeopathic remedies...Right, who gives a shit, but this is a very funny post on the irrationality of the protesters without supporting homeopathy Homeopathy: Massive Overdose Protest
