With Germany's leader Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron both recently declaring multiculturalism dead and many commentators starting to question the Politically Correct orthodoxy on issues like race, sexuality and single parent families are we al last smashing down the barrier that has prevented the sensible policies on many social problems being adopted.

A gobsmackingly intelligent article in the New York Times recently, offering some degree of hope that the academic / political conspiracy is finally being broken down by the persistent erosion of reality. The author made the point that in the wake of climategate and other debacles the pursuit of scientific truth has a chance of once again becoming the dominant theme in university research departments. What has prompted this pigs might fly realisation at the NYT, what could have brought about the understanding of what the politicization and commercialisation of universities, politically correct thinking and multiculturalism has done to the sciences and the academic world in general: truth has been subjugated in favor of answers that either a) do not embarrass the organization providing the funding, or b) will not piss off the Muslims, blacks, gays, feminists, drug users, convicted criminals or fat, ugly people with revolting habits .

It is within an intellectual environment bounded by the narrow limits of politically correct thinking that we must now offer any critical analysis or comment on the work coming out of Universities. It applies to all things but particularly to anything that might point to the truth about any of the left's sacred cows. Like all farmyard animals sacred cows tend to leave a lot of shit lying around the place but political correctness demands that not only do we refrain from holding the sacred cows responsible for shitting everything up, we also pretend we have not noticed the shit they scatter about or the stink it makes.

In recent decades sociologists investigating the root causes of poverty have tended to treat cultural explanations like Lord Voldemort: That Which Must Not Be Named. Poverty can only be caused by evil capitalism and is the result of inadequate income. Values, a work ethic and self - reliance are not alleviators of poverty because far from being relative, poverty is an absolute. Draw a thick, dark line on a graphic representation of society by income, those whose income is above it are not poor, those who fall below the line are poor.

Perversely during the 1950s and 60s in Britain many people who were actually poor were considered middle class. Teachers, junior civil servants, local authority workers and many office workers were very poorly paid but clung uncomplainingly to the values instilled in hem by family and school. This stratum of society was a favourite theme of the novelist R. F. Delderfield and is the main topic of his two volume work The Avenue.

It was this class who embodied the English liberalism of William Gladstone, H.H. Asquith and David Lloyd George, a political succession that saw Britain move from a socially petrified nation in which one was born to a social status and could never leave it to a society where education was available to all, career and social progression was possible and a sense of fair play led to social reforms such as the introduction of old age pensions, unemployment benefit and public health programmes having overwhelming support.

The reluctance to challenge the blinkered thinking of the academic left, to point out that social policy cannot be reduced to one thing, money, arose from political arguments that erupted after Daniel Patrick Moynihan, then an assistant labour secretary in the Johnson administration (1963 - 68) in the USA, talked of the idea of a “culture of poverty” in report published in 1965. Although Moynihan did not invent the phrase (it was first used by an anthropologist Oscar Lewis), his description of the urban black family as caught in an inescapable web of of unmarried mothers and welfare dependency was seen as attributing self-perpetuating moral deficiencies to black people, as if blaming them for their own misfortune. At around the same time Britain's Labour government under Prime Minister Harold Wilson was making the same mistake. Dennis Healey, in charge of national finance had promised to "squeeze the rich until the pips squeak," but had only succeeded in squeezing the hard up middle class while rewarding the more affluent manual and skilled workers with unnecessary state benefits.

Moynihan’s analysis which effectively created the notion of an underclass never lost its appeal to conservatives. The argument succeeded in Britain when Margaret Thatcher's government made selfishness a virtue and in the USA when President Bill Clinton's 1996 reforms were hailed as “ending welfare as we know it.” Social policy in the main English speaking nations seemed to have fallen into a timewarp and returned to the days of "the undeserving poor" being excluded and marginalised.

Such thinking was anathema to the left of course. They had studied the works of Marx and Engles and misunderstood them, concluding the founders of communist philosophy were advocating not a collectivist state of worker owned cooperatives (taking over the means of production) controlling factories, mines and farms, with a central government gently guiding policy but an oligarchic state in which everything even down to the minutia of everyday lives was controlled by an intellectual elite; the nightmare society prophesied on George Orwell's novel 1984.

Though the science lobby are now the ones laying claim to reason and logic it is in fact fiscally conservative thinkers who have factual history on their side. Although the social democracies of Germany and Sweden have been successful every nation that has dabbled with a socialist oligarchy, notably the USSR from 1917 - 89, Germany from 1933 - 45 and Italy, 1922 to 45. People are often confused about the political movements led by Hitler and Mussolini because of the misapplication of the term right wing. They were authoritarian (fascist) but committed to socialist reforms such as redistributive taxation, direction of labour, state funded public health and various forms of collectivism. Franco's Spain was not socialist in any was although it was fascist.

Though supporters of the collectivist left like to portray conservatives as people whose knuckles drag on the ground when they walk, who have not just eyebrows but eyes that meet in the middle it is more often the left that behave like Yahoos. Unthinkingly copying the knee jerk reactions of the mob they scream 'climate denier' at anybody who questions the bogus and discredited case for CO2 driven climate change, shout 'racist' in the way a medieval rabble would shout 'witch' in response to any criticism of President Barack Hussein Obama or questioning of his inept and ill - considered policies or at anybody who suggests black people and Muslims cannot be given preferential status if we are claiming to be an equality loving society, who yell 'homophobe' any time anybody challenges the outrageous demands of the politicised gays that they be granted 'rights' nobody has ever enjoyed in any free society anywhere and demand our political leaders cave in to extremist Muslims who want us to change the mores and traditions of western national communities because they offend a small Muslim minority.

Among the overwhelmingly socialist ranks of the academic institutions the word “culture” became toxic, and the idea that attitudes and behavior patterns kept people poor was shunned. They were quite definite about it, capitalism and capitalism alone made people poor and kept them so. Only big government could alleviate poverty. This was in spite of mountains of empirical evidence that when government gets bigger poverty increases.

At last it is becoming clear that the pendulum has travelled to its absolute limit and is starting to swing back. Politicians and social commentators are openly criticizing the pseudo - philosophy of populist authoritarianism and what Orwell dubbed Oligarchic Collectivism. Even the more open minded and intelligent supporters of the left are conceding that a drink and drugs, anti - intellectualism underclass culture of disorder and heredity poverty are linked. It is no longer professional suicide for academics, politicians and people in the media to be politically incorrect, to criticize minorities, to suggest that for all it's shill complaints feminism has really achieved very little because the left wing harridans who appointed themselves leaders of the campaign to liberate women from male oppression were so engrossed in their political agenda of moving society to collectivist conformity they failed absolutely to understand human nature.

For another step back towards common sense we have to thank the first Black President of the USA, Barack Hussein Obama. Thanks to the ineptitude he has shown in office and before it became very plain to all but the left that this professional race hustler who had ben handed sinecure after sinecure and was devoid of real life experience. Having demonstrated again and again he was completely out of his depth when confronted with the concerns of ordinary people and the problems of running a nation he exposed those people who during his Presidential campaign shouted down any attempt to highlight his lack of qualification as racist for the hypocrites and bullies they were.

When dealing with members of ethnic minorities It is not racist to judge a job holder's performance by the criteria we would apply to the ethnic and cultural majority. It is far more racist to demand that minority members are given privileged status because the people who make or support such demands are suggesting the minorities cannot compete on level terms, that they are inferior.

It turns out then that those who are hailed as great heroes of the civil rights movement for claiming there was such a thing as 'black consciousness' and promoting a separate and separatist black culture have in fact done a great disservice to people of African and mixed race people. Their great civil rights campaigns, which were always led by self serving men whose main focus was on their place in history, have achieved nothing other than to create a culture of failure, resentment, poverty and dependency among the people they claimed to be liberating.

Similarly the sexual liberation of the 1960s was hi jacked by feminists and leftists to be used as a weapon in their war on traditional values. Unfortunately, but given the left's inability to understand human nature, which they believe can be changed by passing laws predictably, the sexual liberation of women combined with the undermining of community values has created a single - parent sub culture and condemned many millions of children to a childhood without a male role model. The consequences of this are highlighted in daily news coverage of the tragic state the lives of many teenagers get into.

If the link between culture and poverty is back in play we have a chance of helping the poor. First however we must flush politically correct agendas out of the education system.
