The progresive left, the politically correct Thought Police, are big on supporting all minorities in their pursuit of their rights and in preaching tolerance and diversity to society at large. But what happens when two of those precipous minorities, say for example Muslims and feminists come into conflict on some issue.

I have to admit that reading the contributions on web forums of people who call themselves liberals these days I am embarrassed to apply the term to myself although I have all my adult life been a classical and have based my political thinking on the works of John Locke, David Hume, Thomas Paine and John Stuart Mill among others. Imagine then my horror at reading the thoughts of people who describe themselves as 'liberals' or 'progressives' and finding suuport for ideas that can only be described as authoritarian.

A few weeks ago the self-obsessed chatterati of America's east and west coast were obsessing about the sacking of a broadcaster unknown to British audiences, Juan Williams, by National Public Radio. This saga would be the usual storm in a teacup whipped up by "progressives" when they find an individual or group high in the "disadvantaged" hierarchy has been insulted and demand a lynching only to find the person responsible for the insult is also part of a minority that is highly placed on the scale of disadvantage except that it seemed to encapsulate all the major points of contention in the political debate in the U.S.A.

Mr Williams is by all accounts an engaging, black liberal broadcaster who has been a pillar of Public Radio’s left-of-centre journalist tradition. In addition to anchoring a daily show he is reported to have appeared regularly as a panellist on Fox News discussions, representing the left-liberal opposition to the channel’s more right wing commentators. Many in the rationalist centre suspect this connection with Fox had something to do with the bizarre vindictiveness (so typical of the irrational hate displayed by the left towards anyone who questions their certainties) with which he was summarily dismissed by his bosses at NPR. Officially, Mr Williams’s sacking offence was to have mentioned that he felt uneasy when he entered an aircraft and saw Muslims in traditional middle eastern dress.

He did not criticize Islam in any way. He did not say all Muslims are potential suicide bombers or limb amputators or wife stoners. Neither did he make any insensitive remarks the religious beliefs of Muslims or the sex life of The Prophet (PBOH). Still, the self righteous leftie goons at National Public Radio felt he had given sufficient cause for his contract (of many years’ standing) to be terminated without notice. Whereupon, Everybody with a public platform from Whoopi Goldberg on the left to Bill O’Reilly on the right, jumped on NPR – whose knowledge of the constitutional right to free speech seemed surprisingly inadequate considering that it is exists by virtue of government subsidy.

Since the incident Fox has offered Mr Williams a $2million contract so though devastated by the sacking, believing that it cast doubt on both his character and the nature of his views, the broadcaster came out of it well.

There is a larger issue to be considered here though, and one that needs to be exposed on both sides of the Atlantic. Though it has been the custom of the left to claim they are the more caring, civilised, fair - minded side of the political spectrum that claim is looking more and more hypocritical. It is the left who try to shut down debate; in the U.S. on the immigration issue, Obama's loonytoons economic policies, The President's parentage, climate change etc. Race is the card they play over and over. The only reason for questioning any of Obama's policy initiatives they claim is because he is black, the only reason for demanding immigration controls is xenophobia, the only reason for questioning climate science is religious prejudice. It is a quite irrational approach of course. Putting it simply for the economic imbeciles who still support Obama, it is very, very foolish to borrow from a loan shark to pay the credit card debt but that in effect is what the administration is doing with quantitative easing. With unemployment running at nearly 10% (and most independent analyses claiming the real figure is several points higher) and with no economic recovery in sight it is extremely foolish to think of open door immigration policies. The country is broke, what do the left find so hard to understand about that? Putting it simply for the climate science worshippers, what is the point of calling yourselves scientists, claiming the science is settled and accusing those who are sceptical of not understanding science when any true scientist would tell you science is never settled.

In Britain we have slightly different versions of the same problems. Under the previous government 'New' Labour, irresponsible financial management and the crazy expansion of the public sector to mask how deep the systemic problems of de-industrialization had bitten into the employment base had left the country with an unsupportable structural deficit. The government simply was not taking in enough in real terms to meet its running costs and pay the public sector wages and benefits bill. with nearly a third of the work force either directly or indirectly employed by various levels of government and a further 12% dependent on benefits that should not surprise anybody.

The wider issue here and one that strikes a chord in Britain: how far should a publicly-funded broadcasting organisation such as NPR or the BBC be permitted to exercise what is nothing less than censorship in the name of what it regards as acceptable opinion and the majority of people regard as politically correct thuggery? Who acts on behalf of the taxpayer or the licence fee payer, to control what can and cannot be uttered over the airwaves? And, to put it bluntly, just how dangerous is the mindlessly smug self-righteousness which can develop in an organisation in which everybody who is hired subscribes to the same leftist certainties?

The Juan Williams saga exposes the hypocrisy at the very heart of all left/liberal/progressive thought. These people are so convinced of their own innate goodness and moral superiority they see nothing illiberal in imposing their prejudices on the whole of society.

Mr Williams is or at least was one of them and as a member of the 'liberal' caucus he was required to subscribe to the whole agenda, thinking, behaving and talking in a certain way. As soon as he went off message to express a personal point of view regarding feelings prompted by Muslims on planes he thrown to the sharks. One NPR executive even said in a press conference that Juan Williams' remarks were between him and his psychiatrist. Right so. That explains it then. Williams was clearly insane, that is the only reason he anybody could possibly disagree with the progressive agenda. I have never understood how people who call themselves liberals find it so impossible to understand that somebody might possibly hold a differnt opinion and disagree with them on any social or economic issue.

America's liberals and the UK's Labour supporters, collectively calling themselves the "progressives" will not appreciate the irony when I recall the time another presenter on NPR said it would be divine justice if Jesse Helms or one of his grandchildren became infected with AIDS. Absolutely nothing was said and no action was taken to reprimand of sanction the person responsible for that. It is also interesting to note that the Juan Williams remarks prompted like 30 - 40 complaints while the Jesse Helms thing gathered over 40,000 complaints ... and yet the progressives are forever wailing and gnashing their teeth about bias on Fox News.

It is blatanly obvious the "progressive" movement in the U.S.A. and Europe is in very deep ideological poo here. For several decades they have been obsessing about the"rights" of minorities and special interest groups while increasingly marginalising members of mainstream society. At first their patronising gaze was focused on the (mainly white) working classes, then on racial equality, women's rights, feminism, gay rights, race again, immigrants and now islamists. But what tangled webs they weave when they try to balance support for every minority group that imagines itself to be disadvantaged.

When the new global capitalism failed the progressives seemed to have the field to themselves. Labour in Britain and the Democrats in America were elected not on their policies or the strength of their candidates but by protest votes against the excesses of the right and their corporate and financial sector supporters. Because of the left's inability to perform the necessary balancing act of keeping the working and middle classes on board while massaging the extremism of their ideological fellow travellers it has all gone wrong for the progressives.

Perhaps it went wrong when the working classes turned out to be more small "c" conservative than they were assumed to be and were then put on punishment detail with the Politically Correct Thought Police issuing edicts and how the non - elite (dare I call them '[the proles'?) could behave and what they could say or think. The higher levels of the oligarchy turned to the next group and began to lavish the taxpayers largesse on ethnic and sexual minorities which was a pretty stupid move as the workers between them commanded a lot more votes.

The rot could also have set in when a large section of women turned round and said "erm... the thing is we're actually quite happy to get married, stay at home and bring up a family, we don't want to be go getting career women and even if we did there are insufficient careers available that pay well enough to make it worth our while after we have paid a nanny or nursery fees." The left are big on facile assumptions but they have always been weak on thinking things through and have absolutely zero understanding of human nature, a fact proved by their naive belie that human nature can be changed through legislation.

Now, through the Mohammedan dichotomy, the left show the world the ideological knots they have tied themselves up in. In the past few weeks two problems has snuck up and whacked them in Britain. First a court presided over by a politically correct judge ruled that a Muslim man cannot be prosecuted for marital rape because in Islam a woman is her husband's property to do with as he wishes. It is only a few short years since, after a long and bitter battle, it was recognised by British law than a man who forced himself on his wife was guilty of rape and yet although that campaign was led by the left here they were demanding exemptions for their Muslim friends.

Another case is rumbling but has not erupted yet. It will when the debate takes place in Parliament about the gay rights movement's call for the law to oblige churches to perform same sex marriages. In this case the campaigners have shot themselves in the foot by noisily demanding the Catholic Church be denied exemption on grounds of their beliefs but tamely accepting the demands for exemption from Muslim groups. A similar error of judgement was made when Catholic adoption agencies were not given exemption on adoption by same sex couples. Under the leftist Labour government that one was push through but it did not do the gay movement any good. People rightly asked "who do these lefties think they are when they usurp to themselves the right to decide the sensibilities of gays and lesbians are more important than the sensibilities of Roman Catholics?" A society that operates one set of laws for one section of the community and a different set for another cannot call itself a democracy.

The progressives have chosen their new best friends badly. Whahbism and Islam in general are totally incompatible with democracy, free speech, civil rights, gay rights, women's rights, religious freedoms and secularity yet each of these has in the past been a previous cause celebre for the left. Inevitably in Britain and the US we have already heard the first whispers of demands that Muslims in our nations should be governed by Sharia law rather than the secular laws of our elected governments. Two nations in one? Two cultures with two legal systems ocupying the same space.

Last year my son experienced a demonstration of why that cannot work. His partner Debbie had been out with her sisters. One lives close to the town centre so they walked to her house together then Debbbie and Nat. called a cab. They had no problem with it's being driven by a Muslim in traditional dress but were understandably frightened when the man offered money for one of them to go to his home with him. Debbie texted Dave and he was waiting outside to meet the cab. When he asked the man why he had insulted the women the driver replied, "Thy are prostitutes, they wear revealing clothes and go out without their husbands or fathers."

So what should David have done according to the Thought Police? Thanked the guy for putting him straight, invited him in and allowed him to do what he liked to Debbie? In the interests of diversity we must let Muzzas rape western women as punishment for our girls' wilfilly immodest behaviour?

Faced with these dilemmas what do the progressives do when a black, Asian, gay or Muslim, journalist or media personality discloses personal feelings on one aspect of Muslim behaviour? They crucify that person. What will they do when islamism comes into conflict with feminism? Tell all those liberated women that if they go out without a male companion or are seen in public with their hair, arms or legs uncovered a taditionalist Muslim will consider them prostitutes and they will only have themselves to blame if they get raped?

So what will happen when the G-BLT community, the black community, eligious minorities or disabled people find their needs are in conflict with the thinking of idealogues? They should enjoy their privileged status now because once the progressive movement finds a group is not totally on message and they fall out of favour there is never a way back. To behave in any other way would require the progressives to do the unthinkable and admit they are wrong.
