Labour's NHS Privatization By Stealth PFI Deals Are Killing Hospital Patients

A worldwide push by the unholy alliance of corporate money and political control freakery has seen the spread of privatization and financialization of government services through the developed world and (more blatantly perhaps) in the porr nations of the third world. One of the nastiest manifestation of the privatization of public services and once which not only permits but actively encourages the plundering of taxpayers money by corporate pirates are the UK's PFI schemes, which apparently use private capital to fund public infrastructure development.

PFI schemes were first introduced to Britain in 1992 by John Major’s conservatives but vastly expanded in scope and number by Tony Blair’s New Labour government soon after winning the 1997 election (even though the Labour party were fierce critics of PFI’s in opposition, ah but hipocrisy and double standards is what we expect from left wing politics.)

When we refer to scope, initially PFI schemes were used to fund large infrastructure projects, Blair's Labour government used them as sweeteners to make it worthwhile for corporate businesses to take on contracts to manage the provision of public sector functions. Bulid a toll bridge might have been an olf style PFI contract. A New Labour style would have been 'deliver refuse disposal and recycling facilities as a managed service'. In effects Labour's PFI projects were a licence to print money.

British taxpayers are estimated to owe roughly £222 billion to banks and private contractors as a result of 720 PFI contracts in operation now. Because the Conservative Lib Dem Coalition have continued to enter PFI deals and Labour are more enthusiastic about enriching the onscenely rich than ever, business analysts predict that by 2050 the UK’s total PFI bill is estimated to be a staggering £310 billion or four times the UK’s national deficit. Taxpayers must fund the interest due on that. Critics have been warning since the 1990s these contracts are overpriced, one - sided, shrouded in secrecy and – in certain instances – dependent on criminally rigged interest rates.

The result has seen banks such as RBS profiting from such agreements although they do not directly provide any services. A report by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) published in March 2015 showed a large decline in quality of services linked to a lack of cash as a result of increased payments to PFI contractors. The cash shortage has caused poor quality Accident and Emergency (A&E) care, insufficient staff numbers, over-stretched staff, low morale, long patient waiting times, and a heavy reliance on agency employees.

The health care regulator’s probe also revealed terminally ill patients had been offered sub-standard care, not enough priority was afforded to patient safety, and some patients were not offered sufficient medication to manage pain stemming from their ailments. It is rather galling for those of us campaigning for an end to corporate / bureaucratic dictatorship and a return to democratic rule to constantly have to rebut accusations by tribalistic Labour voters that the Conservative / Lib Dem Coalition are responsible for the NHS crisis. It's true the Coalition have done nothing towards solving the problem in fact they have probably made things worse, but the current NHS crisis is Labour's creation. And as for idiotic claims that UKIP would privatize the NHS, how can they when Labour have already privatized evenry NHS fiction that could possibly turn a profit.

If you look at PFI contracts for the NHS alone, in 2001-2 public sector outgoings totalled £1.76bn. In fact NHS PFI repayments don’t peak until 2029-30, when they hit £2.71bn a year. Enthusiastic proponents of the PFI include the World Bank, IMF and (in the UK) the CBI. If action is not taken PFI is set to bankrupt a nation already creaking under an unsustainable burden of debt. PFI’s are not on the government balance sheet so they disguise the real state of the economy. Statistics however cannot represent the deaths of British citizens through lack of care caused by poor care quality in cash starved facilities because PFI payments take precedence over provision of services. Every man, woman and child of the UK owes £3,400 each to private banks and corporations funding PFI’s but by 2050 it will be £5,200 each. And that is if numbers of PFI deals increase only at a moedest rate.

But with 'free trade' treaties like TTIP and TESA setto give corporate business power to override national law, things could get a lot more insance very quickly.

This "Russian Influence" Campaign Is Just A Click-Bait Scheme

Congress is investigating 3,000 suspicious ads which were run on Facebook. These were claimed to have been bought by "Russia" to influence the U.S. presidential election in favor of Trump.

It now turns out that these Facebook ads had nothing to do with the election. The mini-ads were bought to promote click-bait pages and sites. These pages and sites were created and then promoted to sell further advertisement. The media though, has still not understood the issue.

Hypocrite Obama Warns Against Income Inequality While Delivering $7,700-a-Minute Speech

Former President Barack Obama spoke to the Chamber of Commerce in Montreal on Tuesday, warning against income inequality and the concentration of wealth—remarks from a man who reportedly commanded $400,000 a speech, or $7,700-a-minute at that rate, for his Canadian speech.

Obama said the world must do more to combat income inequality, noting that the concentration of wealth fans fears that governments exist solely to benefit the powerful, NBC reported.

“That’s a recipe for more cynicism and more polarization, less trust in our institutions and less trust in each other,” Obama said.

“And it’s part of what leads people to turn to populist alternatives that may not actually deliver,” Obama said in a thinly disguised jab at President Donald Trump without naming his successor specifically.

According to the Toronto Star, not everyone could afford to see the man calling for the end of income inequality.

Trump Stands by Flynn Amid Federal Investigations Into Russia Ties

President Donald Trump tweeted support early Friday for Michael Flynn following a report Thursday night that the disgraced former national security adviser, who resigned after mischaracterizing interactions with Russian officials, has offered to testify to the FBI and Congress in exchange for immunity.

"Mike Flynn should ask for immunity," the president wrote, "in that this is a witch hunt (excuse for big election loss), by media & Dems, of historic proportion!"

The Wall Street Journal first reported Flynn's offer to the FBI and the Senate and House intelligence committees, all of which are investigating his and other Trump team officials' alleged ties to the Russian government, based on an anonymous source familiar with the discussions. Flynn's lawyer, Robert Kelner, wouldn't confirm the offer to the Journal, but said the former Defense Intelligence Agency chief and Trump campaign aide "certainly has a story to tell, and he very much wants to tell it, should the circumstances permit." Amnesty International warns U.S. coalition about Mosul civilian deaths

On Tuesday, human rights group Amnesty International said a recent sharp uptick in civilian deaths in Mosul, Iraq, suggests that the U.S.-led coalition isn't taking adequate care to avoid civilian casualties, a potential "flagrant violation of international humanitarian law." The U.S. military says it is investigating a March 17 airstrike in Mosul's Old City, called in by Iraqi forces trying to take the Western part of the city from the Islamic State; Iraqi officials say the death toll from that strike could hit 200 or more, making it one of the deadliest civilian attacks by the U.S. in Iraq.

The U.S. has confirmed the strike but not the casualties. "It is very possible that Daesh [ISIS] blew up that building to blame it on the collation," U.S. Army chief of staff Gen. Mark Milley told reporters in Baghdad on Monday.

146 African Migrants Feared Missing After Boat Capsizes in Med

About 146 migrants are feared missing after their boat capsized after leaving Libya, according to a Gambian man who was rescued following the disaster, the United Nations’ refugee agency said Wednesday. The man was rescued by a Spanish military ship participating in the EU’s “Operation Sophia” to crack down on smugglers, and then brought to the Italian island of Lampedusa.

The vessel left on Sunday or Monday from Sabratha, northwestern Libya, with five children and several pregnant women among those on board, the Gambian told a member of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees who met him at a hospital in Lampedusa. Most of the passengers were from Nigeria, Mali and The Gambia, he said.

He said that the boat began taking on water a few hours after setting off, and that he survived by holding on to a fuel can.

According to information gathered by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the man was spotted almost by accident by the Spanish ship, which then transferred him to the Italian coastguard. “It shows that there may very well be shipwrecks we don’t know about, because the boats sink without a trace,” Flavio de Giacomo, an IOM spokesman, told AFP.

The Devon and Cornwall police force, tasked with the patrol of the largest geographical area in England, are pioneering perpetual drone surveillance by establishing an unprecedented 24-hour drone surveillance of its patrol area set to begin this summer.

The police drones, also identified as “unmanned aerial systems,” have undergone smaller tests last year. Multiple reports state that the drones will mostly be used for locating crime suspects and missing persons as well as surveillance of crime scenes.

Steve Barry, the UK’s National Police Chiefs’ Council spokesman regarding police drones, touted the cost savings of choosing these devices rather than deploying police helicopters; according to a report from The Daily Mail, Barry predicts “forces across Britain would soon be using them as they are cheaper than helicopters and can perform some duties of bobbies on the beat.” The does not specify how deeply these police drones will be able to inspect individuals, including in regards to audio capacity.

The Mail noted that Barry has pondered the possibility of drones replacing some officers and said “there may be an opportunity at some point in the future to rationalise what we need our cops to do because we find drones can do it more effectively and more cost-efficiently.” However, Barry did not indicate that he approves of a reduced police force in favor of the devices, and other officers and experts were quoted in the report as viewing drones as a supplement for police rather than their replacement. WikiLeaks has released the latest batch of documents in its Vault 7 series of documents related to the CIA’s espionage programs. The latest release, dubbed ‘Dark Matter,’ reveals the specific techniques used to target Apple products.
The release discloses the alleged details of methods employed by the CIA to compromise devices manufactured by Apple including the iPhone and Macbook Air.
In a statement from WikiLeaks, the whistleblower group said Thursday's ‘Dark Matter’ leak includes details of the ‘Sonic Screwdriver’ project, described by the CIA as a "mechanism for executing code on peripheral devices while a Mac laptop or desktop is booting."
Techniques named in the release detail methods that could allow devices to be compromised between the manufacturing line and the end user or by a CIA asset in close proximity to a target.

Westminster Murderer Is 52-Year-Old Brit With Prior Criminal Convictions

After yesterday's balls up, in which the man who murdered four people near the Houses of Parliament was incorrectly named as an Islamic "hate preacher" who is actually in prison, today UK police said that the man they believe to be responsible for the attack in Westminster yesterday has been formally identified as Khalid Masood.
Masood, aged 52 (Dec 25, 1964), was born in Kent and detectives believe he was most recently living in the West Midlands. Masood was also known by a number of aliases. Masood was not the subject of any current investigations and there was no prior intelligence about his intent to mount a terrorist attack.

EU Parliament Head Sets ‘Red Line’ on Citizens’ Rights Post-Brexit

European Parliament chief Antonio Tajani said securing the rights of millions of EU citizens after Brexit was a “red line” when negotiations begin soon. Nunes: Trump transition members were under surveillance during Obama administration

Members of the Donald Trump transition team, possibly including Trump himself, were under U.S. government surveillance following November’s presidential election, House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) told reporters Wednesday.
Nunes said the surveillance appeared to be legal but that he was concerned because it was not related to the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s meddling in the election and was widely disseminated across the intelligence community. “I have seen intelligence reports that clearly show that the president-elect and his team were, I guess, at least monitored,” Nunes told reporters. “It looks to me like it was all legally collected, but it was essentially a lot of information on the president-elect and his transition team and what they were doing.”

North African Migrants Allegedly Rape Milan Schoolgirl in Broad Daylight on Commuter Train

A 15-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly groped and raped by two North African migrants on the commuter train from Milan to Mortara Thursday afternoon.

Europe Accelerates Move To Begin Elimination Of Paper Money

While the world has been disracted by Donald Trump's eccentric style of doing politics, the European Union has quietly launched the next offensive in the war on cash. These unelected bureaucrats have boldly asserted their intention to crack down on paper transactions across the E.U. and solidify a trend that has been gaining momentum for years.

The financial uncertainty amplified by Brexit has incentivized governments throughout Europe to seize further control over their banking systems. France and Spain have already criminalized cash transactions above a certain limit, but now the commission has unilaterally established new regulations that will affect the entire union. The fear of physical money flowing out of the trade bloc has manifested a draconian response from the State.

The European Action Plan doesn’t mention a specific dollar amount for restrictions, but as expected, their reasoning for the move is to thwart money laundering and the financing of terrorism. Border checks between countries have already been bolstered to help implement these new standards on hard assets. Although these end goals are plausible, there are other clear motivations for governments to target paper money that aren’t as noble.

Negative interest rates and high inflation are a deadly combination that could further destabilize the already fragile union in the future. With less physical currency circulating, these trends ensure that the impact of any additional central bank policies will be maximized. If economic conditions deteriorate, the threat of citizens pulling cash out of their accounts and starting a bank run is eliminated in a cashless system. So long as the people’s wealth is under centralized control, funds can be shifted at will to conceal any underlying problems. But the longer this shell game is allowed to persist, the more painful it will be when reality overrides the manipulation.

EU foreign affairs chief says aging Europe needs migration (Russia today)

Aging and graying Europe won’t close its doors to asylum seekers, as it needs immigration, the EU’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, said, adding that Europeans had been migrants themselves “up to few years ago.”

“I believe Europeans should understand that we need migration for our economies and for our welfare systems, with the current demographic trend we have to be sustainable,” Mogherini said.

As the Hill reports, the decorated former CIA career officer who served in the Directorate of Operations between October 1982 and June 2005, said on Friday that Obama has lost control of the Middle East following attacks in France that left at least 84 dead. "This is going to get very, very ugly," Gary Bernsten said on Fox & Friends Friday.

"The president of the United States, as Newt Gingrich has stated, has failed in his responsibilities to defend the United States. He has lost control of the Middle East. It is in flames, and that is what he will leave when he leaves office." One can also make the argument that it is not so much Obama, as his first secretary of state, the person who in less than 4 months may be America's next president.

Will Merkel's Migrant Mishaps Spring Germany's Right-Wing Party Into Power?

Resuts from local elections held in Germany last weekend indicate that German Chancellor Angela Merkel is in deep trouble. Her party, the Christian Democrats is losing votes to opponents from the right and left, largely because of the illegal immigrant crisis brought on by Merkel's crazy 'open doors' immigration policy which ahas resulted in Germany admitting criminals, terrorists and many illiterates, according to Werner Patzelt, a political analyst at the Technical University in Dresden. Patzelt, a political analyst at the Dresden-based Technical University, described the latest local elections in Germany as another indication of the fading influence of Chancellor Angela Merkel as the main beneficiary of her policy disasters is the anti immigration, anti EU party Alternatif fur deutschland (AfD) often described incorrectly as an extereme right wing group. In fact it is Merkel's Christian Democrats that have most resembled Hitler's National Socialists by trying to suspend the right of free speech and suggesting opponents of immigration be charged with crominal offences during the ongoing crisis. The interview came after the populist, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party finished a strong third in municipal elections in the country's central state of Hesse, held on March 6. According to Germany's state news outlet DW, Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats finished with 28.2 percent of the vote, ahead of the Social Democrats with 28 percent; Alternative for Germany obtained 13.2 percent of the vote, beating the powerful and well established Green party. The vote took place a ahead of elections to the state legislatures of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony-Anhalt, which are scheduled for March 13. Taxpayer-funded three-star hotel accommodation provided for asylum seekers has been labelled discriminatory because paying guests receive better food than migrants who demand their “VIP status” be recognised.
Private contractor Clearsprings is housing 129 refugees at the Mediterranean-themed Europa Gatwick Hotel where migrants have their own rooms, with en-suite bathrooms, plus a television and tea and coffee-making facilities.
Yet, according to the Mail on Sunday, one of them was indignant about the conditions and demanded that they should be treated like VIPs.
The man, who has previously worked at hotels in Dubai, said: “We should be considered VIPs because we are long-staying guests. We are making money for this hotel.”

Personal Freedom Versus Political Paternalism

What is the role of government in society? This has been and remains the most fundamental question in all political discussions and debates. Its answer determines the nature of the social order and how people are expected and allowed to interact with one another – on the basis of either force or freedom.
The alternatives are really rather simple. Government may be narrowly limited to perform the essential task of protecting each individual’s right to his life, liberty, and honestly acquired property. Or it may be used to try to modify, influence, or dictate the conduct of the citizenry.
In the first case, the government is assigned the duty of impartial umpire, enforcing the societal rules against assault, murder, robbery, and fraud. All human relationships are to be based on mutual consent and voluntary association and exchange.
In the second case, government is an active player in people’s affairs, using its legitimized power of coercion to determine how the members of the society may live, work, and associate with each other. The government tries to assure certain outcomes or forms of behavior considered desirable by those who wield political authority.

It's Official! Labour Party Supports Oppression Of Muslim Women

A Muslim women’s rights organisation has sent an open letter to the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, outing the innate sexism of the Labour leadership in refusing to take action against the large numbers of male Muslim Labour councillors who have actively blocked Muslim women from entering politics. The group demanded an independent review and accused the party of prioritising votes and being “complicit at the highest levels”.

Muslim Women’s Network UK (MWNUK) named the Muslim-dominated city councils of Peterborough and Birmingham as a particular concern. The latter is already embroiled in a sexism row, and has been accused of covering up the activities of Muslim gangs alleged to have grooomed, abouse and sexually exploited under - age girls in council run care homes. Recently the Lord Mayor-elect and chairman of Birmingham’s Central Mosque was forced to step down because he said forced marriage was not a problem and lied about dealing with horrific cases of domestic abuse.

The MWNUK urged Labour leaders to investigate "systematic misogyny displayed by significant numbers of Muslim male local councillors" and suggested that Muslim men within Labour had been allowed to operate under the "patriarchal ‘biradari’ system".

"They don’t like women to be heard, to be empowered," a group spokeswoman told BBC2’s Newsnight, explaining how in Labour dominated councils talented Muslim women had been harassed out of top positions. In the examples given, the party had effectively allowed the men to enforce Sharia principles; ensuring women could not act freely without the permission of male guardians.

Optician Fozia Parveen claims her efforts to become a Labour councillor in Birmingham in 2007-8 were scuppered by Muslim men in the party: “At the time, I was aware of a smear campaign against me, they said that I was having an affair with one of the existing councillors. I was quite taken aback. People were turning up at my family home trying to intimidate my mum.”

She claimed Muslim men who were members of the local Labour party were behind the efforts to prevent her from standing.

Dave Walker, who headed the Government Accountability Office (GAO) under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, said when you add up all of the nation’s unfunded liabilities, the national debt is more than three times the number generally advertised. “If you end up adding to that $18.5 trillion the unfunded civilian and military pensions and retiree healthcare, the additional underfunding for Social Security, the additional underfunding for Medicare, various commitments and contingencies that the federal government has, the real number is about $65 trillion rather than $18 trillion, and it’s growing automatically absent reforms,” Walker told host John Catsimatidis on “The Cats Roundtable” on New York’s AM-970 in an interview airing Sunday. The former comptroller general, who is in charge of ensuring federal spending is fiscally responsible, said a burgeoning national debt hampers the ability of government to carry out both domestic and foreign policy initiatives. “If you don’t keep your economy strong, and that means to be able to generate more jobs and opportunities, you’re not going to be strong internationally with regard to foreign policy, you’re not going to be able to invest what you need to invest in national defense and homeland security, and ultimately you’re not going to be able to provide the kind of social safety net that we need in this country,” he said. He said Americans have “lost touch with reality” when it comes to spending. Walker called for Democrats and Republicans to put aside partisan politics to come together to fix the problem. “You can be a Democrat, you can be a Republican, you can be unaffiliated, you can be whatever you want, but your duty of loyalty needs to be to country rather than to party, and we need to solve some of the large, known, and growing problems that we have,” he said. **************************************************

No sooner had Russia’s foreign ministry issued a fairly straightforward statement on Syria’s political future this week, then Western media news outlets were getting all in a lather with the spin that Moscow was preparing to hang Syrian President Bashar al-Assad out to dry. What that reaction shows is that these outlets are dutifully laundering the political agenda of their governments. That agenda seems to involve getting Russia to implement, unwittingly, the Western objective of regime change in Damascus. Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was quoted by Russian news agency ITAR-TASS as saying that the Syrian leader’s hold on power was not a matter of principle for Moscow. She also spoke about other important issues: the imperative to respect the sovereign right of the Syrian people to decide the political future of their country; and that regime change in Syria would usher in even greater disaster from terrorism and refugees. However, it was the words on Assad that got picked up and thrown into the spin cycle with haste. Britain’s state broadcaster, the BBC, issued a breaking news flash with the headline: ‘Russia says keeping Assad not crucial’. While American channel CNN adverted that: ‘Russian leaders were opening the door for Assad’s exit’. Such so-called news items are laughably becoming more like commercial breaks. Commercial breaks between, well, more commercial breaks. Low on intelligent content and pitched to get viewers to buy somebody’s tawdry product. There was nothing further to back up either report on BBC or CNN – only a selective, speculative interpretation of the words from the Russian foreign ministry. There was no mention of the sovereign right of the Syrian nation nor of the global-scale disaster if regime change were to take place. Just a seemingly puerile gaze at the words about Assad’s staying in power not being «a matter of principle» for Moscow. What the Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman actually said was this: «We have never said Assad's staying in power is a principled aspect. We are saying that the change of regime in Syria could become a disaster not only on a local or even regional scale, but, with account for that problem with refugees that we have now, this could become a big black hole». Russia had already warned about Western media «juggling with its words» over Syria, and in particular on attempts to wilfully distort its policy. Following the Vienna summit last weekend on Syria, there was Western speculation that Moscow had tacitly agreed to Assad relinquishing power. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov sternly dismissed then what he called were «rumours». «I heard that the rumours are being spread already that it has been or will be agreed that Assad will step down in some period of time. This is not the case,» said Lavrov. If Western media were to provide a journalistic service instead of laundering their governments’ political agenda then they might have reported that Russia’s position is rightly centred on the sovereignty of Syria and on the defeat of foreign-backed terrorism in that country. That Moscow is saying that the question of Bashar al-Assad staying in power, or not, is not a matter of principle is simply stating that Russia does not view the Syrian leader as a life-long president. Assad’s presidency will be subject to the democratic will of the people, which is the all-important sovereign point. What is so controversial or enigmatic about stating that? Nothing, unless there is a mischievous will to misconstrue. Put another way, if Russia had said instead that Assad staying in power was a matter of principle for Moscow, then the Western media would no doubt have gone into double-spin mode and claimed that the Kremlin was dictating that the Syrian leader must remain in presidential office forever – regardless of the will of the electorate. One can imagine the headlines in that scenario: ‘Putin lays down law to Syrian people’ and so on. Of course, Western media spinning is hardly new and the consequences of the latest dash to misinterpret will no doubt be as fleeting as a soapy bubble. But the alacrity with which Western media outlets operated on the issue is instructive. Russia’s military operation in Syria to protect the state and its sovereignty from foreign-orchestrated mercenary terror groups has dealt a devastating blow to Washington’s covert military agenda of regime change. That agenda, instrumented by the deployment of mercenary terror groups, predates the outbreak of violence in Syria in March 2011 by several years, as uncovered by American journalist Seymour Hersh. Also as disclosed by former French Foreign Minister Roland Dumas, as well as leaked US diplomatic cables indicate from as early as 2009. Washington and its allies are now being compelled to use a political means to achieve what they couldn’t otherwise pull off by covert military means – because of Vladimir Putin’s bold intervention in Syria, beginning on September 30. Recall, too, that US Secretary of State John Kerry demanded last month, with typical haughtiness, for Russia to «bring Assad to the negotiating table». Not that there is much to discuss as far as Washington, London or Paris are concerned. Assad has to go, in their arrogant view, sooner or later. By going into so-called «diplomacy mode», as opposed to covert terrorist-supporting mode, what the Western imperial overlords expect is for Russia to comply with a political framework concocted in order to push Assad from power.
