Shale Gas and Oil Equals Salvation? Sadly not. by Ian R Thorpe.
Recent discoveries of huge gas and oil bearing shale deposits in the USA, CAnada, Russia and under Britain's territorial waters as well as off the Falkland Islands and in the Antarctic are raising false hope of an early end to the energy crisis and food price inflation. What is the reality of these new oil and gas reserves, do they really offer the economies of the developed world salvation and a return to business as usual.

Shale Oil and Gas, The Saviour Of Civilisation

Talk of an oil and gas shale glut is raising false hopes among businessmen hit hard by rising fuel prices. Prices for petrol, diesil, domestic heating oil amd gas for industry and himes will remain high. High prices are the price the UK will pay for keeping the lights on and the wheels turning. Fortunately Britain is better placed placed than many competitor nations to ride out the storms that must come as grobal oil and gas reserves from traditional deposits are depleted.

With tensions rising throughout the Middle East as evidenced by the trouble in Egypt over the past three weeks the price of oil in international markets has broken through $100 a barrel again, two years after it briefly rose above that level. Price increases due to rsing demand and worries about political instability have been exacerbated by a sudden upsurge in the activity of Somali pirates (Pirates seize Greek Tanker ... Italian Tanker Taken By Somali Pirates ). This combination of events has already raised concerns about the possible impact on economic recovery in the developed nations.

Looking beyond these regional geopolitical influences, prices are on the rise across the globe. A wide range of essential commodities including food, chemicals, oil and rare earth metals essential in the manufacture of high tech goods all appear to be on an inflationary trajectory. Gas is no exception. Wholesale prices on the UK spot market doubled from 30p a thermal unti (therm) in March 2010 to 60p by December. Futures prices for 2011 rose by nearly 50% over the same period. This hockey stick shaped increase is responsible for the recent jump in domestic heating bills.

Casual observers may be confused by this upward trend. They have read about the discovery of major shale gas deposits in the USA, Canada, Russia and the Antarctic as well as large fields under the Irish Sea and in the mid Atlantic around the remote, rocky outcrop of Rockall. It used to be said, "There's **** - all on Rockall." Well not for much longer it seems.

News of these reserves has been hailed as a long-term saviour of western industrial economies which could lead to a global gas and oil glut. Shale has certainly revolutionised the US market, releasing vast, and hitherto uneconomic reserves. It now accounts for 20% of production there, up from just 5% in 2006. As a result, the price of natural gas in the US has fallen by 40% over the last three years. It now has trades at around half the cost of gas in the UK.

In spite of the optimism there are many reasons for seeing the shale gas bonanza as largely confined to the USA, at least for the foreseeable future. Although the existence of gas-bearing shales in the States has been known for decades, the potential of these reserves has only recently been unlocked through a combination of access to previously protected land, and the higher world prices providing an incentive for owners, extraction companies and refiners to take on the difficult and costly operrations of releasing useable reserves from the shale.

These conditions are unlikely to be replicated anywhere else that oil and gas bearing shale deposits have been identified All the UK's resources are under water which more than doubles the difficulty of getting the payload to where it can be processed into something industry and homes can use. Though shale might buy the US government time its short term impact on world markets may be very limited. The long-term trend however will remain inexorably upwards. Among consuming countries, Asian gas demand grew at more than 10% last year, and with Asian firms perpared to pay the asking price this alone has been capable of supporting the rise in wholesale prices. Barring a significant recession in the region, Asia's demand for Liquid Natural Gas will continue to increase.

For developed economies switching from coal to gas power generation is a cost-effective method of achieving emission reduction targets. Older Coal-fired power stations are dirty and inefficient. They need replacing as soon as possible; old nuclear plants too are nearing the end of their useful life. A programme of closures must commence in five years at the most. With only one project to generate realistic amounts of energy from sustainable, reliable sources on the drawing board, the 2 Gwatt Orkney Marine Power scheme, we can see few prospects of a reduction in demand. Therfore what oil and gas we get from shale will only fill the gap left by other sources such as the Arabian oil fields running out (Wikileaks - Saudi oil reserves overstated)

The shale deposits are good news because they offer us the hope of keeping the wheels of industry turning and keeping ourselves fed. Those siren voices proclaiming an end to recession broght about by a new oil boom are just bankers and politicians singing the same old song in the hope of tricking us into restarting static economies by taking on more personal debt.

Electricity bills set to rise to pay for wind farm subsidiesWhile sensible people agree that the climate is causing serious problems few people still think this is due solely to CO2 emissions from human activity. Even the author of Gaia theory has said the problem is more complex. Well if that is the case why are domestic fuel bills rising to pay for subsidies paid to the operators of these failed technologies. [ also Daily Stirrer 21 May 2012

More Climate Science Fraud Exposed: Himalyan Glaciers Are Not MeltingThe Himalayas has lost no significant ice over the past decade, according to a new study, that found melting ice from glaciers is having a much smaller effect on sea levels than previously thought. Previous studies relied on physical measurements of ice caps and glaciers on the ground. It's ironic that people who have relied on high tech modelling techniques to conceal the reality of what is going on are now exposed (again) as crooks and liars by new high tech methods of measuring glaciers ...

The Pain In Spain as Green Energy Policy FailsYou will not find anything in mainstream media, either print or broadcast, about the failure of the green energy initiatives that have left Spain in dire economic strais or Denmark in the dark. Fracking And Shale Gas Extraction Blamed For Lancashire Earth TremorsShale gas in the bedrock under Lancashire could probably meet Britain's gas needs for 250 years. The process for extracting it, fracking, is controversial however and has been linked with minor earth tremors and seismic events. Xavier Connelly puts the risks and benefits in perspective.BR> The Nuclear Accident And The Elimination Of Risk
In the wake of the world's worst nuclear accident at Fukushima, Japan; the pusillanimous poltroons of the international fear and panic industry, aka the green movement and the progressive left, are once again demanding that all risk nbe elimiated from human life. And if that means no nuclear electricity, no energy from oil or coal and no light when the sun doesn't shine or the wind doesn't blow - well they haven't though thst through yet. Standing Up To The Climate Science BulliesThe climate science scammers, the pusillanimous poltroons who tried to help their political and corporate pymasters steal £$trillions from the taxpayers of the world with a campaign to spread fear and panic about carbon dioxide have lost the fight with sceptics so comprehensively in the end they resorted to bullying. Now one of the most prominent physicists in the world, Prof. Freeman Dyson has denouched them as fools and frauds.
Iceberg Alley BluesWe must stop using oil say the politicians and scientists as it becomes more imperative that exploration begins in Iceberg Alley off the Canadian Coast, elsewhere in the Arctic and in other sensitive locations. They are just trying to soften us up for carbon taxes of course. Nobody knows better than politicians that the world runs on oil and that alternative non polluting sources are a long way short of being able to supply energy needs ...
Rare Earth Mine Reopens - Triumph For Common Sense.Politicians and the science community rave about how carbon is destroying the planet. But what's the truth about how clean green energy will be. Rare earth metals used in digital devices, electric car batteries, wind turbines and many other processes that are being promoted as necessary to restart the global economy. Mining and refining the ores is a huge pollutant but new mining licences are being granted ever so quietly.
The Growing Problem Of Rising Food PricesWhile the warmists rant about carbon and the Church of Scienceology Cult rave about climate science. there are threee real and immediate problems facing us that nobody is talking about. These are overpopulation, water shortage and food price inflation. This article deals with food prices, links at the bottom lead to our posts on population and water scarcity.
How Our Creature Comforts Are Baking The WorldAs the arguments rage on between the Climate Science Wankers lobby and the sceptis, realists and out and out deniers we observe that still nobody who gets media coverage, nobody who is talking sense about climate chaos, carbon based fuels, deforestation or over population is really being heard. Quite simply there are too many of us and we want too much. Who needs science or politics to understand that?
Climate Change Act: An Inspired Way To Waste £400 BillionAs the attempts of the science lobby and government (whose strings are pulled by the New World Order) to force us to believe the hopelessly flawed and totally discredited case for carbon driven global warming here is some clear thinking on the question of climate change..

Food Will Cost The EarthA bid by Australian mining giant BHP Billiton to buy Potash Corp of Canada draws attention to food price inflation, rising commodity prices in world markets and an impending global food supply crisis. Vertical Farming: The Looniest Idea Yet For Saving The PlanetClimate Science is a strange discipline. Part trainspotting, part trekkie convention going, it combines an almost autistic obession with collcting details, a very autistic obsession with focusing on a single theme and a fantasist's capacity for self deception and a taste for mutual masturbation. The latest loonytoons idea for saving the planet involves turning skyscraper buildings into farms growing food for urban populations. Apart from increasing the cost of food by 1000% and increasing rather than reducing the carbon footprint of food production the idea is so insane noboy could ever take it seriously. Nobody that is except scientists, politicians, academics and the media.

The Futility Of Wind Farms. In some ways the Conservative / Liberal Democrat coalition has made quite a good start in government. One area they are set to fail badly however is energy. Driven by politically correct thinking the coalition are set to follow Labour down the road that goes through wind power and eventually leads nowhere. Wind turbines look fine on paper. If they generate at their optimum output for 365 days a year the contribution to energy needs looks like a viable business proposition. The problem is due to the limitations of the technology and the vagaries of the weather wind farms are doing well if they operate at a quarter of their potential output.
Climate Change Crooks And LiarsThough climate change alarmists claim that that "the science is settled" no longerr holds water the arguments rage on. If anything they are getting more heated as the climate science lobby, knocked from the moral high grounds show their true colours. But more and more evidence is showing the climate change science was never settled and the global warming Armageddonists had built their whole case on very flimsy evidence.

Climate Change Science ScamI have been campaigning about climate change for over thirty years. Now, the more I read of efforts by governments, academics and corporate interests to come up with a quick fix the more I am convinced they are working a scam to make quick, easy money
Climate Change CorruptionThe spiel from the control freak governments of developed nations in the run up to the Copenhagen Climate Conference billed as the last chance to save the planet from a global warming catastrophe went something like this.'You must listen to the scientists, you must not think for yourselves, you must never question authority,' Luckily we all knew the scientists chanting this mantra were as much crooks and liars as the politicians and billionaires they worked for We need Nuclear PowerAfter thirty years of dithering, listening to know -nothing scientists and do nothing wierdie-beardies, short-termism and pandering to the profit motive our ruers have finally accepted we ned to build nuclear power stations to ensure supplies of reasonably clean electricity for the future.

Thinking Is Bad For The Planet
Green Scaremongeringthe trend among people who like to label themseves "scientists" to brush aside criticism from highly educated and well informed individuals outside their specialist field by saying "You're not a scientists, you don't understand science," arouses deep suspicion. We are rght to be sceptical and suspicious ... An Inconvenient Truth About Climate ScienceGovernments, corporate interests and academics have been spreading fear and panic about climate change in advance of the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit billed as our last chance to avoid catastrope. The secret is out now though, the scientists are frauds and the politicians are opportunists. So what is the inconvenient truth about climate change. To Save Civilisation we Need More CO2 Not LessWarmageddonists are always whining about hoe raised levels of CO2 in air will destroy human society. It is very well known however that most animal life can happily breathe much higher concentrations. Another fear is failure of food supplies. But others argue raising CO2 levels would nullify the case for another science sacred cow GM food crops. So who is right? Statistics, Graphs and Hockey Sticks
The politicians and academics of "climate science" are screaming about saving the planet. It is very plain however that all their ideas involve the already mega rich making lots of money and us poor punters paying losts more tax. There is another, much more reliable, way ... and not a statistic, graph or hockey stick involved ...

How The Grexit May Make Things Worse In Greece
It looks more likely that Greece will crash out of the euro. But if it attempts to return to the drachma, there's a pretty big problem, which no one's really come up with a way to fix.
