The Persecution Of Johnny Ball and The intolerance Of Warmageddonists
by Ian R Thorpe.

Veteran TV presenter Johnny Ball, whose programmes on science and mathematics enthused many young viewers in a way formal education never can, probably did not realise he was stepping into a lion's den when he voiced his opinion that the mathematics on which the carbon driven global warming case rests are very dodgy. The Climate Science Warmageddonists turned their fury on him as they have on all who challenge the teachings of their doomday cult.

Theosophy For Beginners

The Basic Principles of Theosophy Theosophy is not truly a religion, having no creed or dogmas, it is a belief system based on philosophy and mystical thought. Followers of Theosophy seek through study, contemplation and their efforts to connect with nature a mystic insight, in effect an insight into the nature of God and the laws of the Universe. The name Theosophy derives from two Greek words, Theos and Sophos, God and Knowledge, Theosophy literally means knowledge of god. The Theosophist believes that the truest knowledge comes not through reason or senses, but through a direct communication of the soul with the Divine Reality. Where it gets interesting is in the revelation of what that Divine Reality actually is.

In the latter half of the nineteenth century the versions of Christianity that defined moral and cultural boundaries in the western nations were restrictive and repressive. In Ireland many teenage girls considered morally deficient, not just those unmarried young women who fell pregnant but many who simply displayed a healthy and natural interest in boys, make up, fashionable clothes and pop music, were consigned to the tender mercies meted out by the Nuns of the Magdeline Sisters order. This practice continued until the second half of the twentieth century and is depicted in a film, The Magdelene Sister. Similar treatment, though rarely so harsh, was given to people, usually women, who offened against the moral strictures of other mainstream faiths.

This was an era when sex was officially frowned on and only acknowledged as an unfortunate necessity for the purpose of continuing the race. Some religious sects such as The Shakers forbade sex completely. There are very few Shakers left in the world now. From the mid eighteenth century onwards until the 1960s, with short breaks for World War One and Two, this strict moral code, which has little to do with true morality, demonised female sexuality and regarded as a curse the natural urges of men. Phrases such as 'fallen woman' 'scarlet woman' and aphorisms like ' marriage is the price men pay for sex, sex is the price women pay for marriage' were in common use.

When Queen Victoria, who we now know to have been a bit of a goer, was asked how a woman should with her husband's urges is reported to have replied, "Lie back and think of England."

It was not just sexual behaviour that could bring about social ruin. Respectability was all. Swearing was out, showing emotion suspect and adopting a slightly showy lifestyle branded on as 'not quite decent.' No wonder then people began to look for something more flexible and accommodating to the vagiraries of human nature.

Madame Helena Blavatsky founded the Theosophical Society in the United States in 1875.

The ideas of Theosophy can be traced back to ancient times with Hindu and Buddhist thoughts and doctrines being prominent alongside those culled from Zoroastrianism and the Jewish beliefs contained in the Cabala (or Kabbala as those who believe the letter K is kool would have it) and what we now know as The Hermetic Wisdom.

Theosophy is the study of the teachings of the Masters or Mahatmas (Mahatma = 'Great Soul'). It is a method of studying the so called Ancient Wisdom, and of pursuing the ultimate truth. Theosophy began as a subject of study but became an organized group in the late 19th century when the Theosophical Society was founded by Henry Olcott and Helena Blavatsky. The Theosophical Society became a popular and powerful group throughout the world, especially in America and India. Most of the society's practices and beliefs were determined by Blavatsky and her writings. During her lifetime, she wrote numerous articles and letters, and she also authored the major works: Isis Unveiled, The Secret Doctrine and The Voice of the Silence. The Secret Doctrine became the major source of information to all those interested in Theosophy. Her writings combined many types of existing beliefs (both western and eastern) into a comprehensive and structured belief system.

Unfortunately the Theosophical Society gradually came to resemble a personality cult dependent more on the strength of members devotion to Blavatsky than on their personal quest for understanding.

Although the cultish aspect of the movement she founded had undermined her influence towards the end of her life Blavatsky's published works were extremely influential and are still fascinating subject matter for study. At the height of her popularity these ideas were also very controversial. Her works are often referred to as fraudulent and plagiarized (in fact she borrowed heavily from ancient texts and from many obscure writers who had ben part of a revival of interest in pre - Christian religions during the Enlightenment era but had formed her own ideas from their work). These criticisms lead many people now to question the authenticity of Blavatsky herself.

Regardless of the authenticity of her writings and practices, people believed in her, and followed her teachings. However, after the death of its founder death the Theosophical Society fragmented, each new schism producing another sub sect. Many of these retained some version of the word "theosophy" in their titles. There are now many groups around the world which had their origins within Theosophy, though most have few members and some are very secretive.

Theosophy, according to its followers, is the study of Divine Wisdom. Through the study of Theosophy, one will begin to find the answers to life's deepest, most significant questions: What is the meaning of life and death, why is there evil, what is the point in suffering, is there a God, why are some people lucky and others unlucky? Theosophy is an attempt to provide insights which will allow one to answer those questions and more to one's own satisfaction and ultimately, see the truth. The motto of theosophists is: "There is no religion higher than the truth."

Unfortunately, as the Enlightenment philosopher David Hume said, "There is no great, universal truth. Everyone's perceptions are uniquely his (or her) own.

The teachings of Theosophy should not be taken literally, any belief system should be timeless and over time the meaning and useage of words changes. What is important and what must be preserved of Mme. Blavtsky's work, no matter how history shreds her reputation, is the ideas. There is nothing in Theosophist thinking that ought to offend Christians or followers of any other faiths; the ideas follow the principle of treating others as one would wish to be treated, moral restraint as opposed to self indulgence and a quest for the understanding that enables us to live a good life. People who hold Theosophist beliefs can be and are are members of other churches. Theosophy can help to shed light upon and help make sense of the mysteries of those religions that the hierarchy are not keen to explain to lay members. As such, to people living at the start of the twenty first century it offers a tool for finding answers to the challenges of life, rather than a complete, pre packed, one-size-fits-all set of answers.

Science cannot provide all the answers, there is room for faithWhy, in these days when the militant atheist supporters of Richard Dawkins and his fellow travellers are so ready to decry and belittle religiopus faith and claim science has proved God does not exist, do so many eminent scientists still believe in God, including a number who have made carers in science but are very active in their respectoive churces?
There Is A War Going On Between Religion And Science. Is A Truce Possible
The war, let's be honest, is between religious fundamentalists and science fanatics. Each is straying into the other's territory. But both are out of order and should leave the unanswetrable questions to philosophy. Can there be a truce, can the two coexist?

Reincarnation: Is There Scientific Proof We Can Live Again?
by Ian R Thorpe.

What happens to us after death? It is a question humans have asked since men first stood erect (fnrr, fnrr). Is there scientific proof of reincarnation or are such things just superstitious delusions? All the main religions and there many branches believe something of us survives physical death but is ir possible the non phyical portion of our being (the soul?) can inhabit more than one physical body? Might there be scientific proof of reincarnation?

So You Think You're An Anarchist (Anarchy for Beginners - part 2)
Anarchy as has been said in these pages before is not lawlessness but a well thought out political philosophy which rejects the kind of collectivism imposed by certral governmet hierarchies. Supporters of anarchism are not the bearded conspirators of cheap fiction but people who believe in individualism, self determination and minimal government interference in personal lives. Anarchy is the thing oligarchs fear most because it is the hardest to control... [Philo and Sophia}
Principled Agnosticism

Principled Agnosticism, a phrase coined by UK writer Madeline Bunting offer a path between absolute faith and absolute atheism of the militant, science worshipping kind.

Anarchy In The UK - and elsewhere.
An outbreak of rioting, violence and looting in Britain's inner city communities in August 2011 was described by the media as anarchy. But to dismiss what was simple criminality as anarchy disrespects a well thought our political philosophy. In the real world anarchism would be unworkable as a system of government but the ideas it offers us are a powerful antidote to the control freakery of the political and corporate establishment.

Getting Started With Existentialism
In our section on philosophy existentialism had to be a major focal points. The world is constantly being defrauded by false prophets and self styled messiahs with promises of deliverance from the constant dangers and uncertainties of life. Established religion, faith and belief systems such as Christianity, Islam and Judaeism and systems of thought like Hindu and Buddhist philosophies at least offer the comfort of belonging and the refuge of ritual while the new crypto-religions of science and psychology arrogantly claim infallibility while failing to deliver on all fronts. Existentialism however is the philosophy of personal responsibility.

Theosophy For Beginners
Those two old friends of Greenteth Multi Media, Philo and Sophia, are dedicated to spreading wisdom and understanding. It's natural then that their page here should include a sub menu on Theosophy, an almost forgotten belief system now although it was only founded in the nineteenth century. Theosophy is based on the ideas of Helena Blavatsky and while it drawns on the ancient wisom found in Hindu, Budhist and Zoroastrian teachings it is fully compatible with Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox versions of Christianity as well as Jewish and Muslim beliefs.

The War Between Science and Religion When cosmologist Martin Rees was awarded the Templeton Prize for scientific work enhancing the spiritual side of life the militant atheists reacted with predicatable angry intolderance. Their intolerant attitude seems to have done more to harm the scientific community than to turn paople against faith and religion.

Alchemy For Beginners - Part 1: A Condensed history Of Alchemy
Religion and Science have in recent times not been comfortable bedfellows. Strange then that the earliest scientists were priests, people who chose todevote their lives to the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. One early science much derided by modern scientists was Alchemy, the quest to turn base metals like lead into Gold. But was the althemists idea reeally daft?

Quantum Metaphysics or The God Experiments
The noise from militant atheists is becoming unbearable as they scream and shout about superstition and magical thinking. So what if science came up with something that turns upside down everything we thought we knew about the nature of the universe. Well it has, twenty years ago. Quantum entanglements, non - separability, oneness, once it enters the public perception we will suddenly have to see ourselves differently.

Are The Cultural Poles FlippingReligion and Science (which some people have turned into their religion) have failed to provide the certainties, the sense of security, that many people seek. First religious convicion was eroded by science and then faith in science collapsed when it's certainties dod not stand up to the logical tests of the real world. Can existentialims offer a third way or is its acceptance of uncertainty to challenging?

The Flight From FreedomFleeing from freedom seems like a contradiction, after all we usually asdsiciate flight with escaping from captivity. In this first part of Existentialism for Beginners however the author identifies a human instinct that predisposes us to seek illusory safety by conforming and being part of the crowd rather than embarking on the lonely life of the free thinker, the person who truly makes their own decisions and follows their own path.
Can We Change? Mystics Say Yes, Science Says No - Or Does It?Medical science has always insisted we cannot change the way our brain works but now that view is changing. A number of scientific studies have proved various things that have nade a lot of science fanatics look silly. The brain can be rewired after traumatic injury, meditation can change the way we think, prayer, riyual and superstition are all beneficial and the placebo effect is a powerful healing
tool.

Not Intelligent Design But A Designer Universe. At the risk of making to sciencyheads kick off about intelligent design we must enter the argument between science and creationism to pose the possibility that the universe did have a designer - not a god such as the creation myths describe but a race of intelligent (?) beings who, live ourselves could not resist meddling with things they did not fully understand thus incurring unforeseen consequences.

Liberal? What Does That Mean? What is a liberal? Is it something to do with the kind of politically correct thinking that obsesses over minority rights while seeking to marginalise mainstream society? Is liberalism an authoritarian system that seeks to impose politically correct left wing ideology on everybody. Or is a liberal, as is argued here, a very respectable political postion whose name has been usurped by people reluctant to acknowledge their inner Nazi.

Electricity bills set to rise to pay for wind farm subsidies
While sensible people agree that the climate is causing serious problems few people still think this is due solely to CO2 emissions from human activity. Even the author of Gaia theory has said the problem is more complex. Unfortunately climate scientists with their snouts in the tax money trough are still pushing the discredited idea that wind turbines and solar panels can meet our energy needs. Well if that is the case why are domestic fuel bills rising to pay for subsidies paid to the operators of these failed technologies. [ also Daily Stirrer 21 May 2012

How The Grexit May Make Things Worse In Greece
It looks more likely that Greece will crash out of the euro. But if it attempts to return to the drachma, there's a pretty big problem, which no one's really come up with a way to fix.
