Are The Cultural Poles Flipping
Religion and Science (which sme people have turned into their religion) have failed to provide the certainties, the sense of security, that many people seek. First religious convicion was eroded by science and then faith in science collapsed when it's certainties dod not stand up to the logical tests of the real world. Can existentialims offer a third way or is its acceptance of uncertainty to challenging?

Existentialism For Beginners
Are The Cultural Poles Shifting

KEYWORDS: culture, existentialism, shift, faith, religion, belief, certainty, science, superstition, human, humanism, society, social, political, progressive, liberal, left, libertarian

There is a movement in society towards social libertarianism. But what does that mean? The blatantly authoritarian and repressive "progressive left" who favour intervention by agents of the state into every aspect of people's private lives argue that libertarianism is just a fancy word for selfishness. Commentators on the right right argue that libertarianism, the right to individual make our own choices about how we live and without constant lecturing and nannying from public employees telling us we must not smoke, that drinking is bad for us as is eating too much fat or sugar, that getting suntanned imposes an unsupportable burden on health services and basically that acting in a way we feel fulfills our emotional needs is grossly irresponsible.

And yet the left still present themselves as the party of liberation and the right as the dark forces or repression while the right, instead of focusing on the left's resistance to our exercising the right to make our own choices too often present the left as opposed to wealth and success.

Maybe the old labels of right and left have become too blurred to serve us now. The fact is the left are no longer a class based movement opposed to wealth and privilege. Look at most politicians of the left. Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Barack Obama to mention only three. They are all from privileged backgrounds. None grew up in poverty, none ever knew what it is like to work in a factory or on a farm. All graduated from elite schools to University and then into politics where they became part of a new bourgeois elite.

What this new elite has done, and it has had a far more debilitating effect on society than the old money hegemony of the past, is to take pity on the working class, the middle income to poor strata of society, and to cast those people as victims of the system. That is why when somebody identifies themselves as a supporter of progressive politics, a progressive liberal or whatever fashionable euphemism they use to disguise their true political nature we should recognize them at once as a Paternalist. Neither left or right but authoritarian and committed to holding power by infantilizing the majority of those they rule.

Nobody knows the origins of the terms left and right of course, one story is that in the pre revolutionary French assembly supporters of the King sat on his right and opponents on the left. It's wrong. Opponents of the King sat in a very deep dungeon in some remote castle.

A better story though we can never know if it is true relates to the right and left bank of the River Seine in Paris (as you stand looking upstream) On the left bank was the artists quarter, the markets, the theatres, cabarets and brothels, the right bank was where the government offices, law courts etc. where housed. Hence the left was associated with libertarianism, libertineism and anarchy while the right stood for authority, control, big government and heavy handed governance.

On the left bank there was fun, bawdy, ribald fun. People who drank or used opium did so knowing their behaviour would most likely lead to early death and cheerfully accepting their fate as the consequence of the choices they made. People who visited the prostitutes, from the expensive courtesans to the street girls who offered a tuppeny upright in a filthy alleyway did so knowing the great pox (syphilis) was the probable consequence of their self indulgence but taking that risk anyway.

The novels of Emile Zola, particularly Nana, though it is set well after French Revolution are still full of references to young men from wealthy families who had borrowed so heavily against future expectations their eventual inheritance could not possibly cover the debt and accrued interest. Nonchalantly, according to legend, they would spend one final night with friends and their favourite whore then retire to their chamber with a bottle of brandy and a pistol, locking the door behind them.

Gamblers at the card and dice tables knew they could lose their entire fortune in a game of chance. And yet they returned again and again to the tables not so much in the hope of gaining a fortune but the vicarious thrill of risking everything.

The wealthy and the poor lived in different worlds. People of the lower orders who set out to escape the grinding poverty of the industrial cities or the agricultural areas to make a new life in the "New World" where rich land was plentiful and anybody could claim forty acres to farm had to be capable of the great act of bravery it took to commit oneself to a three thousand mile sea crossing in a frail ship that was propelled by unpredictable and unforgiving winds and prepared to suffer the the discomfort and deprivation they were bound to encounter on such a voyage, only to step ashore in a strange land where there was no social security to provide for them until the first crop was harvested, few charities or Friendly Societies that might advance a small sum to tide them over, a new world where they might find they had swapped an admittedly grim existence for starvation or violent death. And yet they took that risk.

The ruling class then were not paternalistic as the medieval aristocracy had felt it was their duty to be. The new rulers, bankers, industrialists, did not give a damn what their tenants and employees did so long as dues were paid and deference was displayed when appropriate.

And so the poor had more freedom then than now, in our supposedly liberal times because the one great thing the new elite have contributed to the world is a culture of fear and panic industry. Every week we are assailed with a new scare. Warmageddon, Swine Flu Armageddon, AIDS, Mad Cow Disease, the melanoma pandemic, obesity, terrorism. All of it is grossly exaggerated and all the publicity is carefully crafted to spell out one singe message. You are in grave danger, you are helpless, only the government, the political elite can save you but to earn salvation you must subjugate your individuality and freedom to make your own choices.

And so we are infantilized, made dependent on the agents of government and on their political leaders who in truth are even more helpless than we as individuals. A trait of this new elite of the pseudo left is that they decry religion, they proclaim "science" as the repository of truth knowledge and wisdom and they talk of Darwinian selection as if anybody who ever attended a church service is a young earth creationist. They incorrectly conflate humanism* with a belief in the infallibility and unchallengability of science, a reflection of the reductionism that undermines so much of what is passed off as scientific or progresive thinking In the same reductionist way and profession of religious faith is dismissed as supernaturalism or magical thinking.

Ironically these people are themselves the antithesis of Darwinian evolution theory. They cannot survive in a world without order, a world where their status as members of the elite cannot protect them from the caprice of nature, red in tooth and claw. For that reason they must keep the lower orders in their places forever by convincing the people at the bottom of society they need, are dependent on, the elite.

In all human societies there is a pendulum effect (Foucault's Pendulum). Since World War 2 each time the pendulum has swung to the left it has ben held there by the authoritarian attempts at social engineering of the new elite. Thus each time the social forces to reverse the swing have built up resulting in a more rapid and violent swing to the right.

Now the new elite have so deluded themselves that theirs is the ONLY way, so convinced of their rectitude and moral superiority they have finally committed the ultimate folly of trying to change human nature by passing laws. Naturally the deelpy conservative middle and working classes are aware of how their personal freedoms and civil liberties are being eroded, how politically correct thinking is overruling practical considerations in employment policy, education and the law is marginalising mainstream society in its eagerness to confer equailty and privilege on members of minorities.

For all actions there is an equal and opposite reaction. It is not really surprising that the laws of Physics have parallels in social science, after all Isaac Newton was a human being and there was always going to be a reaction to the progressive authoritarianism of the academic, political and media elite. At the starts of this second decade of the third millennium we are witnessing a move towards social libertarianism in the developed nations as the freethinkers, the independent spirits, the survivors reject infantilism and say, "financial crisis, pandemic, global warming, drought, food shortages, depletion of mineral reserves, bring it on. I'm willing to take my chances. I do not need the protection of an elite that demands I sacrifice my individuality in return. I am a an intelligent, resourceful, adaptable human being.

But what do you do if you are one of the majority of people in modern western society who is not ready to strike out alone into the hostile environment , if you are a product of a state education system that has belittled national cultures and community traditions while praising the superiority of alien cultures. If you have a strong religious faith you are probably quite secure in the community of your church but what of those who have rejected religion? What of those who take part in communal worship but doubt the omnipotence and omnipresence of their God, whose interpretation of the scriptures leads them to the view that while there is something higher than humanity, nature or 'science' it is a think that is beyond our understanding and that has no presence in our world that we would recognise as consciousness, no interest or involvement in our lives or the affairs of our communitites?

Maybe existentialism has something to offer them.

*Humanism

Principled Agnosticism
The argument between believers and unbelievers rages on, but a phrase coined by a British writer, Madeline Bunting, could offer a third way for those who turn away from religion but do not wish to embrace the entrenched views of militant atheists.

Getting Started With Existentialism
In our section on philosophy existentialism had to be a major focal points. The world is constantly being defrauded by false prophets and self styled messiahs with promises of deliverance from the constant dangers and uncertainties of life. Established religion, faith and belief systems such as Christianity, Islam and Judaeism and systems of thought like Hindu and Buddhist philosophies at least offer the comfort of belonging and the refuge of ritual while the new crypto-religions of science and psychology arrogantly claim infallibility while failing to deliver on all fronts. Existentialism however is the philosophy of personal responsibility.

Shock, Horror! Coalition Spending Cuts Cuts Will Mean 50,000. NHS Job LossesPredictably the left are screaming about the claimed 50,000 jobs that will have have to be axed by NHS trusts across the nation to meed government budget reduction targets. What NHS managers are doing however is following in the footsteps of Labour controlled councils and rather than losing the candy - floss jobs created by empire building bureaucrats are slashing front line services to punish users of the service for ...
Flight From FreedomFleeing from freedom seems like a contradiction, after all we usually asdsiciate flight with escaping from captivity. In this first part of Existentialism for Beginners however the author identifies a human instinct that predisposes us to seek illusory safety by conforming and being part of the crowd rather than embarking on the lonely life of the free thinker, the person who truly makes their own decisions and follows their own path.
Who Wants To Live ForeverNever a week and scarecely a day goes by without the latest shot in the wannabe global government's campaingn of fear and panic being fired at us ordinary folk. It will relate to health, drink, drugs, diet or smoking and offer in exchange for another freedom some dubious advantage. The lastest on the British front in this war on reality is a warning that air pollution in casusing 55,000 early deaths a year. Now if we stop all industry in its tracks thus increasing unemployment to 99% of the employable population and stopping those 55,000 deaths, ban smoking and drinking, stop people eating dodgy stuff that promotes stomach cancer etc. etc. pretty soon, if you add up all the lives these measures will save, nobody will be dyining... Which would be a nightmare future in a world full of incontinent old gits.
Can We Change? Mystics Say Yes, Science Says No - Or Does It?Medical science has always insisted we cannot change the way our brain works but now that view is changing. A number of scientific studies have proved various things that have nade a lot of science fanatics look silly. The brain can be rewired after traumatic injury, meditation can change the way we think, prayer, riyual and superstition are all beneficial and the placebo effect is a powerful healing tool.
Not Intelligent Design But A Designer Universe. At the risk of making to sciencyheads kick off about intelligent design we must enter the argument between science and creationism to pose the possibility that the universe did have a designer - not a god such as the creation myths describe but a race of intelligent (?) beings who, live ourselves could not resist meddling with things they did not fully understand thus incurring unforeseen consequences.

The Abuses Of ScienceWith science evangelists increasingly on the back foot as more and more "breakthroughs" are exposed as fraud at worst and hyperbolic self publicizing at best Mary Midgely argues that where scientits went wrong was in denying that science has limitations that rener it unsuitable to answer the questions raised by philosophers.

Silly Secular Society Leader Makes Year's Most Stupid StatementTerry Sanderson, President Of The National Secular Society says: “I look at it this way. If science disappeared from human memory, we would soon be living in caves again. If theology disappeared from human memory, no one would notice. Theology is a completely and utterly useless pursuit. It is self-indulgence of the first order. It grieves me that public money is spent on theological colleges while real education struggles to gain the funds it needs to maintain itself.” The Daily Stirrer's Ian R Thorpe presents a balanced argument that proves Sanderson is a very secular piece of the female anatomy.

Atheists Miss The BusThere have been concerns recently among mainstream atheists, non-theists and non specific non belieers that while we can get along with people who make religion a part of their lives for whatever reason, the mititant type of atheism being promoted by a clique consisting mostly of London based media type and academics in the sciences is attacking that mutual tolerance that has existed between followers of moderate faiths and people who choose to reject faith. An example of the way these atheists are trying to turn non-belief into a religion is summed up in their decision to put advertisments on London buses stating "There is probable no God, now stop worrying and enjoy your lives. The idiotic arrogance of the assumptions behind that line are gobsmacking.
Our Debt To IslamIn the dark ages the light of wisdom was almost extinguished in Europe and North Africa by the religious fanaticism of Christians. Read how the scientific knowledge accumulated by ancient civilisations in India, the Middle East and around the Mediterranean Sea was kept alive in the Islamic world and retransmiited to Europe through the independence of Christian monastic orders.
Blake's HeavenIts amazing how many people can talk of a sense of deep calm, of oneness when looking at the ocean. Maybe it is the vastness, perhaps that water is so essential to all life and such a large part of us. Or again, maybe deep in the subconscious there dwells a realisation that the sea is the cradle of all life. But is the ocean instilling that sense of spiritual oneness or does it merely reflect our being?

Germany's ruling party split over how to respond to AfD
Germany's Christian Democrat party (CDU) is as deeply divided as Britain's Labour Party over how to respond to the upsurge of nationalism. Coronavirus Contains “HIV Insertions”: Claim Stokes Fears Over Genetically Modified BioweaponFor the past two weeks mainstream media reporting of the epidemic of a new strain of coronavirus in China has been getting more and more hysterical. However, reports have pushed back against one "conspiracy theory" about the origins of the virus that has now infected as many as 70,000+ people in the central China city of Wuhan alone (depending on whom you believe).

Corona Virus: Should We Worry
The official data coming out of China and from other sources including the World Health Organisation (WHO) on the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus continues to suggest an exponential growth rate. With more and more infectious disease experts are now openly calling the virus a full-blown global pandemic, many people are asking should we in the west be worried and how bad might things get?

Time is NOT real: Physicists show EVERYTHING happens at the same time

The concept of time is simply an illusion made up of human memories, everything that has ever been and ever will be is happening RIGHT NOW. That is the theory according to a group of esteemed physicists who aim to solve one of the universe’s mysteries.
Most people do not even consider the concept of time but there is nothing in the laws of physics to state that it should move in the forward direction that we know. The laws of physics are symmetric ultimately meaning that time could have easily moved in a backward direction as it does forward. Indeed some adherents to the ‘big crunch’ theory say time WILL run backwards when the universe stops expanding and starts contracting back in on itself.
