We have all witnessed what has happened to veteran TV presenter Johnny Ball this week, the hate attacks, the intimidation and threats of violence. Nobody expects the Science Inquisition and gentle, jolly Johnny Ball certainly did not ever expect that speaking his mind, expressing the opinion formed from his training and years of presenting scientific programmes on TV would provoke such odious and repugnant attacks from younger members of the academy he has served for decades. The demonisation of this intelligent and cultured man confirms that there is no greater heresy today than to doubt climate change 'science'.

Johnny was once an idol to many thirtysomethings who remember having their eyes opened to the wonders of science and numbers by this enthusiastic boffin of 1980s TV. Now however Ball is dismissed as a sad and pathetic and very probably demented old man. The reason his former colleagues, the sewer rats who have hi jacked scientific knowledge have turned on him is very predictable.A vastly experienced mathematician who is well capable of analyzing data without being told what he has to think, Johnny does not agree with the fear and panic inducing conclusions of the Warmageddonists' climate change orthodoxy. He calculates the world will not come to an end anytime soon as a result of a miniscule increase in the level of a trace atmospheric gas. The does not agree that humankind’s penchant for driving cars and holidaying in flying off on holiday are Satanic bahaviour. He even dares to talk of the “alarmism” and hysteria of the apocalypse-hungry Climate 'Science' movement and their cohorts in the Green lobby. His sin, preaching heresy against the new religion, means that not just his work, his evil, blasphemous doctrines, but even his presence in the media can no longer be tolerated in enlightened society. Thus Johnny Ball is refused the right to defend himself against the accusations, to explain why he thinks the science is wrong. As in a medieval witch trial, so in the modern climate science witch hunts, to be accused is to be guilty.

Ball complains his career has been “wrecked by environmentalists”. He has complained in an interview with one of the few UK newspapers to take a sceptical stance on climate science that the number of invitations he receives to speak at science festivals and the like has plummeted by 90 per cent over the past two years, as “extreme greens” have publicly ridiculed his views and even set up website denouncing him as "The Antiscientist and featuring him in photoshopped porno images. These people are so mature and reasonable aren't they?

Misanthropic extremists, the militant atheist reactionaries who denounce religion but are not bright enough to see they have turned their beloved 'science' into the very worst kind of religion, people for whom “tolerance” and “open debate” are utterly alien concepts, have declared jihad against Johnny Ball, a mild mannered old man. So too has the supposedly liberal, open-minded, pro-science, atheistic wing of the chattering classes, the liberatti, rabid defenders against the dark forces of logic of feminism, equal rights, ethnic minorities, gays and lesbians rights, paedophiles rights, the right of fanatical Muslims to insult and provoke non Muslims and all the other hypocritical, self adoring bullshit that they subscribe to believing it makes them better people that us mere mortals. In 2009 Ball was booed off stage and subjected to chants of “shame, shame, shame” at a rationalist comedy shindig in London after he said spiders’ farts are a greater cause of climate change than mankind’s carbon emissions.

The spiders farting thing might be an eccentric viewpoint but (a) When was eccentricity made a criminal offence? and (b) it was after all an effing comedy festival. Much of what Ball says about today’s end-of-days enviro-mania however is eminently sensible. Who would seriously quibble with his critique of the idea that in 39 or 40 years’ time earth will no longer be able to sustain human life, and his concern that teaching such guff in schools is “frightening schoolchildren to an alarming degree”? A recent study found that more and more schoolkids are having sleepless nights panicking about carbon-induced doom in the same way my generation wasted hours of our youths fretting about a nuclear holocaust that would leave behind only cockroaches. And what about all those Apocalyptic threats in between, AIDS, oil running out, food shortages plunging us into a Malthusian dystopia, Mad Cow disease, Flesh eating bacteria and Swine Flu to name only a few. Scientists are pathetic, shallow people prone to hysteria but worse these sad, dysfunctional nerds are all world domination freaks who want to present themselves as the heroes we must trust to save us from doom.

Personally I'd rather rely on Superman and he's not real.

When it comes to climate change orthodoxy – the planet’s getting hotter, it’s mankind’s fault, only eco-austerity will save us – it doesn’t matter if your challenge is wacky or well-informed. It will still be subjected to the Spanish Inquisition treatment, or dismissed as the ravings of a crazed mind or part of an big - oil, big - finance funded conspiracy, a dastardly scheme to discredit the truth tellers. No dissent can be tolerated. In the past society would ostracize people who were involved in any kind of scandal lest a little of the taint should rub off, now the elitists will use all the same techniques - winks, nods, raised eyebrows, hints, smears, no more invititations, ridicule and demonisation – to let the world know somebody is a dissenter, a 'climate change denier' and are No Longer Welcome in polite company. I have compared it to the Inquisition and it is like the Inquisition in many ways, once an individual had attracted the attention of the Inquisitors nobody would go near them because even to exchange polite greetings identified one as a possible heretic. And even if an accused person was not a heretic they would probably confess under questioning. The Inquisitions interrogators had ways of making people confess.

This new Inquisition reverses the aims of the first inquisitors however. The Jesuits punished those who tried to promoted rationalism and humanism, to explore new ideas and understand more about our world; modern “eco-inquisitors” attack those who question their narrow view of what’s rational and logical and are evangelical about their reductionist creed that tries to simplify a vast and complex problem by only considering on element in the algorithm. The British Government's Chief scientific adviser John Beddington this month called on the scientific community to be “grossly intolerant” of anyone who promotes what he decrees to be “bad science”. The persecution of Johnny Ball is an example of what happens when gross intolerance is promoted over free speech and the exchange of ideas.

We have to wonder why the climate science community have so much to fear from allowing sceptics to examine their ideas. Surely if, as they claim, they are seeking the truth, they would welcome such examination as truth will always overcome malfeasance.

The Science Inquisition are not really to be feared, far from having skilled torturers at their disposal they can't even put together a strong arguement and rely on boring opponents into submission by endlessly chanting statistical mantras. Attack them with ridicule, attack their quasi religious dogmas by comparing it with their attacks on traditional religion. What could be more irrelevant and hypocritical than a militant atheist who then tries to deify an abstract, a generic name for a type of scholasticism.

We have many problems to deal with, some of the most serious, food supply shortfall, over population, depletion of water and essential mineral reserves, overlap with the non-problem of climate change (the planet will adapt to whatever is going on as it always has throughout the millions of years before humans were around. So long as we let the Science Nazi's control the agenda for their own ends we have no chance of doing the things that need to be done.
