Mad Science And Insane Ethics or Mosquitos Of Mass Medication
by Ian R Thorpe.

A new advance in medical research by Japanese scientists, a plan to use a genetically modified mosquito to vaccinate humans against disease shows how far out of touch with reality, ethics and economics modern scientists really are. This critique of science in the cause of corporate profits shoots down this latest lunancy and other impractical and unethical plans to medicate the world against our will. (contains strong language)

It is comforting to me as a libertarian to know that all mad scientists aren’t hell-bent on world domination. Apparently some Japanese mad scientists are dedicated instead to world vaccination, because, as reported in the April issue of “Insect Molecular Biology”, they have figured out how to make mosquitoes into teeny - weeny flying syringes full of vaccine. This is a very good example of how medical science has lost the plot and serves not the cause of better health and disease eradication but only the cause of corporate profit in collusion with increasingly authoritarian governments that can hardly be bothered to conceal their fascistic tendencies.

In the Japanese study, according to the published report researchers added an antigen (a compound that triggers an immune response) to the protein mix in a mosquito’s saliva. Now, in theory at least, when the new, improved mosquitoes bite, instead of infecting their human meals with yellow fever or malaria, they will be inoculating them against those or other diseases.

"Cool !" as the sciencyeyheads who love anything that wears a 'science' label would say.

Also completely unethical, as it is a violation of medical ethics to vaccinate human beings without informed consent. And such research is also unnecessary, if someone can give consent, presumably they can also be vaccinated the old-fashioned, no-bug-bite-required way in which a kind and gentle (with a bit of luck) nurse says, "You'll just feel a little prick" and jabs a needle in your arm, bottom or any available vein.

Then apart from the ethical issues, there’s the nagging problem of controlling how many bites from a vaccinating mosquito each subject would get. The Journal notes that there is a significant variation in the number of mosquito bites one person receives compared to the next, so people exposed to the mosquitoes would get very different dose levels of vaccine and many would get none at all. Maybe in a lab in the empty magma chamber of an extinct volcano in the Pacific caldera a team of mad bad scientists are working on a pill that we would be required by law to take daily to make our bodies give off a "bite me" pheromone chemically engineered to attract mosquitos.

It is to the credit of Insect Molecular Biology's publishers that they have noted the practical problems of this loop the loop idea. What is not to their credit is they never question of what health catastrophes may arise from vaccinating people who do not need to be vaccinated.

Molecular biologist Prof. Robert Sinden of Imperial College London is quoted as being quite certain that no regulatory agency would approve releasing these insects into the environment.

Other than that, it’s a brilliant plan! Actually, there is a potential use for the mosquito vaccine: if a mad and bad Bond villain type scientist, seeking world domination, releases a virus that can only be stopped by flooding the world with tiny little flying syringes. Then the lack of informed consent would be overridden by the need to save lives, and the insect-inoculations would pass utilitarian muster. The Evil Mad Scientist’s plot would be foiled by the Good Mad Scientist’s swarm of genetically-altered mosquitoes!

This is not the first attempt at universal medication the mad science world domination freak industry has come up with. There is of course the plan to give everybody statins because some people re overweight and eat too much fatty food. Under the plan everybody would be required to take their daily dose of statins (the arse dribble drug which stops the body absorbing fats as they pass through the digestive system) even if they are borderline anorexic and could do with a few helpings of deep fried lard.

Then there is the plan that comes up every few years to require by law everybody over 50 to take a daily dose of aspirin. This is because people over 50 are more likely to suffer from heart and circulatory diseases than younger people. People over 50 are also more likely to suffer from stomach ulcers than younger people and aspirin is know to aggravate and in some cases cause ulcers and internal bleeding.

The thing about this application of ulcers you see is the drug's effect is to thin the blood. That is a good thing in some cases but in others thinner blood is the thing a patient least needs. I have to admit this one is a bit personal for me, in 1997 at the age of 49 I had a brain haemorrhage. Had my blood been thinned by the aspirin my doctor I would be dead. The doctor, a dictatorial, fascistic idiot who preferred to lecture his patients on lifestyle (in my case someone else's lifestyle, not mine - learn more -) rather than examine evidence, listen to what people were telling him and make a diagnosis, took the approach that all human beings conform to a standard design and there is a standard remedy for their ills.

The same goes for the vaccinutters who insist the MMR vaccine is safe for all because in the vast majority of cases it is fine. To such unthinking machine brains that numbers affected are not statistically significant. This new breed of non thinking scientist loves statistics. Unfortunately humans are not statistics but individuals. In the case of the MMR vaccine, according to its critics the long term damage suffered by a small number of those who receive it is not confined to developmental problems on the autism spectrum. Nobody has collected any meaningful statistics on non autistic problems however. In the case of children to develop symptoms of autism shortly after receiving the vaccine, according to the National Autism Society about one in ten of new cases every year (which is statistically significant) if a couple with one child find that child has become profoundly autistic after the vaccine that is 100% of their family. Statistics are slippery things, harder to hold onto than eel slime.

It was not so long ago when the HPV vaccine was being introduced that the vaccinutters showed their true colours. The HPV vaccine protects against cervical cancer and some other conditions. It is enormously expensive and because Human Papillovirus (HPV) is not the only cause of the condition it will not save every woman. There is also a big question mark over how long the vaccine remains effective but it is fairly certain it does not continue to protect throughout a woman's sexually active years. In spite of that, and the fact that men do not get cervical cancer because we do not have a cervix, the vaccinutters were screaming for adolescent boys too. When these basic facts were pointed out in several internet comment threads I looked at, the angry and irrational response was that boys could be carriers of the virus.

The next obvious question was: OK, if all the girls are protected and men don't have a cervix and so are immune why vaccinate 300,000 boys at a cost of £350 each? The answer? Well those boys might have sex with girls who have migrated from countries where there is no vaccine. One eminent UK medical scientist and committed vaccinutter who was in the thread commented, "Forget the £180 million a year cost. If only one life is saved it is worth the money."

His comment was hysterical and irrational. That more sums up the level of argument from sciencyheads on any topic. One little clique attacked me when I suggested that if we were to ask society to pay huge amounts of tax money to protect people from the consequences of promiscuity we were opening a bottomless pit into which we could pour all the money in the world. As expected I was denounced as a religious nut who wanted to ban sex, hysterical and irrational again you see. I am not in any way religious, not even one of those militant atheists who has turned science into a religion and I was promiscuous for several years as a young man.

My argument was not hypocritical either, an existentialist (a true existentialist) believe we are free as individual to decide our own courses of action but if we claim that freedom we must as individuals face the consequences of our actions. So as I said I was promiscuous, but taking responsibility for my actions I protected against catching embarrassing diseases and causing unwanted pregnancies. It really is not difficult in these days of latex technology. Why then should I an other taxpayers, with such a huge burden already resting on our shoulders pay out money so that young people can run around having unprotected sex without fear of cervical cancer. Girls can still get pregnant, there is no cure for HIV in sight, syphilis, gonorreah and chlamydia are still very nasty infections. Condoms protect against all these and ... THE USER PAYS.

The final plan to medicate the whole world was perhaps the first and certainly the equal in looniness of the mosquito syringe scheme. A proposal was put forward, and was seriously considered by the British government among others, to add anti - depressants to the drinking water supplies in order to alleviate the pandemic of depression that has swept developed nations in recent decades.

Again it is the ethical issues that leap out and smack us round the face with a dead fish. Forcing people to take drugs against their will or administering drugs without the recipients knowledge was one of the crimes Nazi war criminals were accused and convicted of.

"But it's for your own good so how can you object?" The sciencyheads and vaccinutters will whine.

My good? I'm not depressed. Why the fucking fuck would I want depressants? Anyone who wants to give me drugs against my will for whatever reason can fuck the fucking fuck right off. The majority of people are not depressed and we know that giving anti depressants (specifically drugs in the SSRI group (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors) to people who are not depressed but just a bit pissed off with life has in the past had catastrophic consequences. Even if the drugs were know to be completely harmless there is no ethical case for adding them to drinking water. They do not prevent the type of clinical depression that results from chemical imbalances in the brain.

People who regard themselves as progressive liberals though they are neither (socially) progressive nor liberal will complain that I and The Daily Stirrer in general is ant progress and anti science. Neither is true. We are sceptics and unlike the militat atheists and 'secuar humanists who make so much noise about their scepticism we are not sceptical only about those topics the 'inner party' has told us to be scepical about (religion, capitalist economics, superstition, new age philosophies and homeopathy among them.) We are sceptical about every supposed, life - changing development in technology, ever medical breakthrough that takes us all nearer to living forever and every scientific quick fix for the world's problems, every medical panacea, every political scam that primises freedom from fear and uncertainty if we surrender our rights as individuals. What has always troubled us about modern scientists is their inability to foresee unintended consequences and not just to foresee but to actually see and acknowledge what is staring them in the fucking face.

In this critique of medical science and its ideas for mass medication programmes of the kind envisaged by the authoritarian regimes of Hitler, Stalin and Mao Tse Tung the true nature of modern medical research is exposed. Corporate interests are paramount and the aim of scientists is not to preserve life and relieve suffering as the ancient medical oath pledges but to maximise life and create business opportunities. Vaaccine programmes covering the whole population, drugs prescribed with a legal penalty attached for non compliance, psycho-active substances in drinking water, it's all a bit too reminiscent of Orwell's 1984 or Huxley's Brave New World. So where do we go from here? Thinking and acting as individuals, adopting libertarian and existentialist political view and joining the awkward squad would be a good start.

Electricity bills set to rise to pay for wind farm subsidies
While sensible people agree that the climate is causing serious problems few people still think this is due solely to CO2 emissions from human activity. Even the author of Gaia theory has said the problem is more complex. Unfortunately climate scientists with their snouts in the tax money trough are still pushing the discredited idea that wind turbines and solar panels can meet our energy needs. Well if that is the case why are domestic fuel bills rising to pay for subsidies paid to the operators of these failed technologies. [ also Daily Stirrer 21 May 2012
