Rievaulx Abbey, a great Cistercian Monastry in Yorkshire

Rievaulx Abbey from the main York to Scarborough Road
The remains of the great Cistercian Abbey of Rievaulx lie not far off the main York to Scarborough Road near the old Market Town of Helmsley, North Yorkshire.
The Monastery of Rievaulx with its great Abbey Church was founded in 1132 by Bernard of Clairvaux, later St. Bernard of Clairvaux. His intention was to create a centre for the White Friars (the Cistertian Order) among the fertile and wool rich valley and uplands of North Yorkshire. Bernard was no simple monk, he had a business strategy to promote his order: that was to spread Cistertian influence throughout the North of England and Scotland. The foundation of Rievaulx and the subsequent monastic communities that developed throughout Yorkshire, Lancashire, Northumberland, Durham and Cumbria was planned as meticulously as a military campaign. The foundation of the abbey and promotion of its influence was supported by powerful allies such as King Henry I of England and King David of Scotland.

Though Christianity had arrived in Britain in the fourth century it had not been universally embraced, particularly in the north (the Danelaw) where the pagan Danes ruled until the ninth century. Also Catholicism had not ben the dominant Christian church for a long time. Until the Synod of Whitby the Culdees or Celtic Chistians had dominated the north and west. Four hundred years later the more inclusive, less moralistic attitudes of the Culdees still exercised a powerful influence on Christianity in the more remote parts of Britain and among the simple country people the pagan traditions were still observed.

Hate Crime Law - Another Step Towards Fascism?
Those in politics who like to call themselves the progrssive left or progressive liberals love to talk about fairness and equality. Why themn are they so keen to introduce 'hate crime' laws that will grant privilege to certain groups in a system that depens on all being equal? Call us old fashioned but in our view there does not seem to be much justice in replacing one privileged elite with another.

These women, all well heeled and expensively if often somewhat...

Internet Access As A Human Right?
A survey carried out by the BBC found a majority of people around the world believe internet access should be a basic human right.
