There is a move afoot in the City of New York to ban the word “bitch.”
The great and good of NYC’s corridors of municipal power are calling for the word which they deem the most insulting of any apart from the “n” word to be proscribed withing the city precincts.
What a bunch of cunts.
It is true that “bitch” has long been used as an abusive term aimed at women. It can impy many things, for example that a woman is bad tempered, dishonest, solvenly or sluttish or simply strong willed and independant. And when gangstas, homies, yardies and hoodies refer to their significant other as “ma bitch” it usually conveys a complete and absolute lack of respect. But unlike “nigger,” bitch has legitimate uses; ask any dog breeder about the value of a well bred bitch and hear them wax lyrical on the subject, greyhound racing fans will know there are certain times of year it is unwise to bet on a bitch as they are likely to be in or coming into season. And my daughter and her friends love to crack open a couple of bottles of wine and have a good bitch about work, men and life in general.
Bitch is used as an insult against women but not always.
Recently, on the website of a newspaper read by the “aspirational” suburban middle class (people who are not as posh as they think they are) I made a point by using bitch in its correct context, a female canine – “like a pack of hounds that scent a bitch”.
My comment was rejected. “You have used a word some people may find offensive was the finger wagging, nannyish auto – response. I half expected it to add, “you are a very nasughty boy and can wash your mouth with soap and go to bed without your supper.”
Do I resent being told off by computers? Too fucking right I do and if the Politically Correct Thought Police Think I am not going to bitch about it they are wrong.
The comment was resubmitted using the term “like a pack of hounds that scent a brachet.” It was accepted. And what does “brachet mean? Its a medieval English word for a female hound, or bitch.
We ought to be careful how we use words that can be gratuitously insultuing but our culture is in deep trouble if the parameters of acceptable language are to be set by the urban criminal subculture. Taking the attitudes of gangsta rappers etc. too seriously does a disservice to members of minorities, the vast majority, who are decent, hard working people who respect their family, friends and neighbours and try to live a good, pleasant life.
Those people who promote gang culture by over reacting to its excess should be bitch – slapped.
