The Party's Over
With Labour in complete disarray and the Conservatives enmired in the Bag O' Shite scandal the upcoming European and Local elections offer a unique opportunity for radicals, freethinkers and borderline loonies to deliver some shocks to the smug, self serving troughers of the major parties.
The Party’s Over? BY Ed Butt
2006-07-16

I guess few of us have been able to resist a smug chortle at the discomfort of Gordon Brown this week, especially as it was followed by an embarrassment for David Cameron's Bag O'Shite Conservatives.

Before we revel too much in the fact that Brown and the "New Labour Project will be humiliated at the European elections in a few weeks before being chucked out of office in the General Election that must be held in 2010 we should remember the issue that has finally tirned the Labour core vote against the party is something MPs of all parties have been doing since Parliament was invented, something every Prime Minister's administrations since 1832 has done, looking after their friends while lining their own pockets.

How have Parliamentarians go away with it so long? Simply because once in that exclusive club they enjoy the protections and privileges that go with membership so long as they play by the rules.

For decades real radicals have ben arguing Britain’s Parliamentary system with its official parties of government and opposition is undemocratic and breached the British constitution (yes even unwritten constitutions can be breached) The party system, the loyalties it demands and the pressures it imposes pervert democracy.

How so?

The British Parliament is founded on the basis that elected representatives should put the interests of their constituents before loyalty to anything other than the nation itself. The political parties in Parliament operate in a way that requires MPs to put loyalty to party before anything else. The party whips offices are a blatant breach of everybody’s civil rights when they pressure MPs to toe the party line.

Under Blair’s and the Brown's premiership the flaw in this system has become very obvious as the party whips* (very appropriately titled considering the miasma of sex-sleaze surrounding both parties) have bribed, bullied and coerced junior members to support policies which put the interests of the American administration before those of either the British state or the residents (even the non - voting ones) of any constituency.

The party system then favours vested interest over public interest. It is time then, is it not, for we, the voters, to dispense with this system that works against us, that rewards the disloyalty to their constituents of those MPs who unerringly remain "on message to gain advancement in the party hierarchy by advancing the party's interests over those of consituents.

In future this blog will be exhorting its rapidly growing band of followers to support The Greens, The Rainbow Alliance, The Monster Raving Looney Party, Independent candidates, UKIP (they’re a laugh at least), Respect, the Real Liberals or any other fringe candidate contesting any election in the UK. And if your only fringe candidate is a BNP supporter - well the least unacceptable option must be the Lib Dems because at least they support proportional representation, the system in which every vote counts.

Proportional Represenation is far from perfect but is a system that favours the voters against the interests of the self-interest party and the “resistance-is-futile-you-will-be-assimilated” parties. In forty years of voting I have never lived in a constituency that elected an MP I felt I could give my vote to. Only in the European Elections held under a PR sytstem has my vote ever made any difference. Is that democracy?

By following the "vote for the crackpot" strategy we can change that Not only can we get the buggers out if we put our minds to it, we can make sure they never get back in. *officials of the parliamentary groups whose function is to ensure members stay “on message” and are not tempted to try to think for themselves. Labour's Minimum Wage Scam
When you hear of a Conservative politician praising Labour for creating a 'flexible job market' that benefits British employers it does not ring true. What Lord Freud was really praising the government for was letting bosses screw their workers by turning a full time job into a part time job. Not the sort of jobs policy you expect from Labour but we're always said they are more Tory than the Tories.

Authoritarian Box Ticking Culture.
Among the things that have alienated people from the Labour party apart from generakl incompetence, is their arrogant and patronising conviction the public are resady to believe anything the government tells them so long as it is dressed up in statistics and delivered by some fresh faced, smooth talking Labour spinmeister. It is very like the authoritarian regime of Orwell's 1984

Teen Binge Drinking Crisis
Politicians, medical experts and church leaders here in Britain are panicking about the binge drinking antics of teenagers. All around the country young people are getting rat-arsed and behaving in an offensive and embarrassing way. I've read things are pretty much the same in the other English speaking nations so we must wonder is something going on, is there some social trend that is

by James Dahlberg
For his first contribution to The Daily Stirrer James looks at how the popularity of Barack Obama, the Yes We Can" man has collapsed from the record levels seen right after his inauguration as President to the latest polls that make him the most unpopular president ever after a year in office. The economy, unemployment, the disatrous health reform bill and weakness on foreign polcy have played a big part but how much is due to the failings of man himself.

Massive Overdose Protest
by Ian R. Thorpe

Te Merseyside Skeptics Society (or more accurately the selective Skeptics Society as they only seem to be skeptical about what it is fashionable to be skeptical about) are going to protest about himeopathy today by gathering outside Boots Chemist, Liverpool and taking massive overdoses of homeopathic remedies...Right, who gives a shit, but this is a very funny post on the irrationality of the protesters without supporting homeopathy Homeopathy: Massive Overdose Protest
