Italy - Parent of Modern Europe, Prodigal Child Of The EU

Modern Europe was born out of the remains of the Roman Empire so it is truie to say Italy spawned the Europe we know. After the Empire split between Byzantium (now Istanbul) to the east and Rome in the west, the western Empire continued to decline politically. The Byzantine Empire continues for almost a thousand years but by the sixth century Rome was just one of many city - states, Principalities and Grand duchies in Italy. The Catholic Church was the main political power and when Charlmange, King of The Franks did a deal with The Pope The Holy Roman Empire was formed, in effect the first attempt at building a European Union. The rest is history ... and there's quite a lot of it.

The posts listed in this catalogue are not historical, they are a look at where Italy stands in relation to Europe, and more importantly The European Union today. Always an enthusiastic supprter of earlier versions of the Europe community of nations, Italy is regarded as the nation likely to be first to follow The UK out of the Union. But while the UK was always a bad fit with the increasing federalised EU, Italy is integral to its existance.
