Supercharged Jetstream Causing Pakistan Floods
We have argued many times that what causes scepticism about science is the simple minded tendency among scientists to reduce everything to mathematics. Take climate science for example. If somebody comments on the weather the scientists will sneeringly point out that weather and climate are not the same.

Listen to them and they will have you thinking weather is all about sun and wind, rain, snow and hail while climate is about statistics, equations and graphs. Weather and climate are inexorably linked however. The current weather in Pakistan, the torrential rains which are causing catastrophic floods, are a direct result of the behaviour of one of the most influential factors in shaping climate, the jet stream. Google and Verizon Plan For Internet Is Like Letting The Criminals Run The Police Force

If somebody suggested putting career criminals in charge of the police force and the courts sane people would, would they not, be horrified. The Robot With Emotions

"The world’s first robot to be able to display and detect emotions has been unveiled by European scientists. The humanoid machine, called Nao, hunches its shoulders when it feels sad and raises its arms for a hug when it feels happy.

It has been designed to mimic the emotional skills of a one-year-old child and is capable of forming bonds with people who treat it with kindness. Nao is able to detect human emotions through a series of non-verbal “clues”, such as body-language and facial expressions, and becomes more adept at reading a person’s mood through prolonged interaction.

It uses video cameras to detect how close a person comes and sensors to work out how..." In other words it is programmed to respond in certain ways to certain conditions that occur in data strings. It is told by the human who programmed it how to react to certain things. Nao, as the robot is called, does not have feelings at all, it is an insensate machine that dumbly obys instructions from it's programmer.

This is not surprising really, I have yet to meet a scientist who would recognise a human emotion it it ran up and headbutted im in the face.

Graduate Tax Would Hit Low Earners

Teachers, social workers and nurses would be forced to pay thousands of pounds more for their university degrees if ministers replaced tuition fees with a graduate tax, according to a report today.

The University and College Union (UCU) findings suggest that relatively low earners, such as nurses and teachers, would pay thousands of pounds more if a graduate tax was introduced.

Vince Cable, the business secretary, last month floated the idea of a tax tied to earnings, through which low earners would pay less than they now do for their degrees while those with high incomes

Yeah but, no but - we thought getting a degree opened the gateway to a glittering career with high earnings, professional respect and job security among the many rewards. Could it be the coalition are coming to terms with the reality that we are producing too many graduates for the number of graduate jobs available.

The Labour Party, the progressive left as they like to style themselves is obsessed with rights. They are convinced the major political priorities in this country concerncivil rights (including the right on Muslims to mutilate their daughter's genitals and the right of Muslim men to rape their wives. Senior labour figures have recently supported both of these "inalienable human rights" though both would be crimes for follwers of any religion exept Islam.

Before being dumped out of office the rights obsessed Labour Leadership (Harriet Harperson to be exact) dumped on British businesses and the general public by passing the equalities bills. This farrago of misbegotten ideology was born out of self righteousness and vindictiveness. It denies employers and organisations the right to a fair hearing when complaints of discrimination are made against them. Under the terms of the act if a member of an ethnic, sexual or religious minority or someone marginalised by physical disability or mental illness feels they have been discriminated against no counter argument is permissible. The minority member feels they have been unfairly treated because of their minority group status: case proven. Madame justice has removed her blindfold and joined the Politically Correct Thought Police. Among the other "rights" Labour talked of but did not manage to enshrine in the legal codex was the right of everybody to attend univrersity. Single figure IQ? Can't read and write? Want a degree? No problem, if you want a degree it is your right to attend university for thre years at taxpayers' expense and be awarded one. What about attending lectures and tutorioals, writing essays, submitting course work? Forget it, those things are a monstrous violation of your rights. If the people who call themselves progressive liberals or the progessive left would stop and try to think for a moment, ~~it would hurt their head a lot~~ they would perhaps get an inkling that their ideology is nothing to do with fairness or equaility. Placing certain groups above or beyond the law can never be fair. It is the social policy on which tyranny is founded.

What made humans evolve with far higher levels of intelligence and creativity that any other creature is one of the great mysteries, one of the questions that will probably never be answered. Many scientists have developed theories but science is by natre reductionist. When part of a question is too complex for scientific analysis scientists ignore it.

Philosophers have tried to answer the question with little more success than science.

Religious thinking offers all manner of gods and supernatural possibilities but none contains a cerdible answer.

In this video of Matt Ridley giving a talk at TED some interesting teories about the role of cooperation and collaboration are explored. Though it is not an answer (and Ridley does not try to claim it is) it does give some insight into how humans, having developed the ablity to think in abstract concepts have been able to overcome all the problems of the past and advance our societies.

It does not tell us how we will deal with the challenges of global warming, overpopulation and the end of oil but the fear and panic mongers are exposed for what they are, quick buck seekers working on behalf of big business and big government.

Whatever the future throws at us humans will be better able to find a way to cope and survive if we do not surrender the power to think for ourselves and determine our own course of action to becomie infantilized slave of the Nanny state.

And if we fail to do tha, well nothing will metter any more will it?

This is an absolutely fucking stupid article from a Muslim twat who lives in the USA and who is whining about opposition to the plan to build a Muslim Cultural Centre on Ground Zero, the site of the World Trade Centre destroyed in an attack by Muslim Terrorists in 2001. The writer who claims he is a moderate Muslim takes the usual stance taken by Muslims of demanding tolerance and cultural understanding from the west while showing none in return.

Interesting coment thread on this (there were about 50 comments when I read it) with the authoritarian left who like to style themselves 'progressive' or 'liberal' yelling 'racist bigot' at anyone whose opinion differs from theirs while most commentators who are truly take a similar view to mine. Which is that I don't give a flying fuck where Muslims build their 'Culural Centre with a library, meeting rooms and a prayr area' (a mosque by any other name?) but only people trying to deliver a calculated insult or a bunch of cunts would be insensitive enough to try to put a Muslim centre anywhere near ground zero.

Earth Braces Itself For Solar Tsunami

Look in some parts of the internet and you might well think gay rights and single sex marriage are the only problems humanity has to deal with at the moment.

Look in others and you might well be swept along on a tide of irrationality and hysteria with the people who beleve one more lighted candle will plunge the world in to a Carbon Driven Armageddon the prospect of which gives AGW alarmists wet dreams.

In other places still you could gain the impression that everything is going well and all threats to human security will vanish allowing the world to become a socialist utopia just as soon as every single human on the planet opens their heart and accepts Barack Hussein Obama as their messiah.

There are many ways of being deluded. Fortunately while the delusionals have been pursuing their different obsessions some of us have been keeping our eye on the ball.

This is why I can bring you this warning of an immintent disaster that makes AGW (if it exists) look like a minor inconvenience, makes Barck Hussein Obama look like the irrelevant and incoherent windbag he is and makes all the "rights" wailers look about as significant as a fart in a hurricane.

NASA Scientists braced For Solar Storm

Yes folks, this sory could be bigger than all the doomsday scenarios dreamed up by fear and panic merchants in the history of everything ever. Here are some snippets:

The solar fireworks at the weekend were recorded by several satellites, including Nasa’s new Solar Dynamics Observatory which watched its shock wave rippling outwards.

Astronomers from all over the world witnessed the huge flare above a giant sunspot the size of the Earth, which they linked to an even larger eruption across the surface of Sun.

The explosion, called a coronal mass ejection, was aimed directly towards Earth, which then sent a “solar tsunami” racing 93 million miles across space.

Images from the SDO hint at a shock wave travelling from the flare into space, the New Scientist reported.

Experts said the wave of supercharged gas will likely reach the Earth on Tuesday, when it will buffet the natural magnetic shield protecting Earth.

"This eruption is directed right at us," said Leon Golub, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).

"It's the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time."

Scientists have warned that a really big solar eruption could destroy satellites and wreck power and communications grids around the globe if it happened today.

Nasa recently warned that Britain could face widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time, after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation “space storm”.

The Daily Telegraph disclosed in June that senior space agency scientists believed the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun wakes “from a deep slumber” sometime around 2013.

It remains unclear, however, how much damage this latest eruption will cause the world’s communication tools.

You must remember here The Daily Telegraph is a UK National Newspaper so the lack of any mention of consequences for the USA does not mean you guys get a free pass.

This potential threat was known in June. Seeing as it makes that matter of the oil spill in the gulf look like nothing worse than somebody going a bit mad with the sun protection before they went in the water isn't it strage how mainstream media have not had much to say on the subject. Even more strange, the climate change fear and panic merchants have not jumped on this one and blamed it on the use of fossil fuels by developed nations.

Or maybe its just that the more serious minded among us have ben keeping abreast of developments in the environment while the carbon - related OCD sufferers have been obsessing about their hockey sticks.

The lesson we can all learn from this however, though I doubt the AGW alarmists are capable of learning anything, is that science is great for helping us understand what happened yesterday but crap at predicting what will happen tomorrow.

What will the solar storm do? Well at worse it could be the end of civilisation as we know it, at best it might not affect anything. The most likely outcome is somewhere in between those extremes.

Nobody can tell you any more that that and if anybody says they can, they are a liar or a fool or they are on the make.

Fat, Obese? Who Cares? We're Obsessed By Size

A health minister in the coalition government, Anne Milton, has criticized the health scare industry for branding as obese people who are merely overweight. In fact people who are not even overweight can be branded "clinically obese". It happened to me once, I stood in a doctors surgery stripped to the waist with a discernable though not pronunced six pack, a 32" waist, great pecs and hugely powerful shoulders on display only to have the stupid, blind, unable to think for himself doctor peonounce me "clinically obese".

"Don't be ridiculous", I said, "look at me". "I can only look at what your statistics tell me" said the doc, reducing me to a number. Is it any wonder the public have lost faith in the medical profession if people are faced with such bureaucratic stupidity?" More rcently we have had the cohorts of New Labour's Politically Correct Thought Police telling us we must say obese rather than fat. Obesity is a health problem you see, while saying someone is fat simply insults them.

Here are two different views on the fat versus obese issue:

Fat? Yes - Ashamed? No Anne Milton is more than welcome to call me fat – I prefer it to obese, in fact. I have a body mass index of around 34 and wear a size 18-20 (UK), so I've certainly heard both before. But, despite the health minister's belief that hearing the word fat from doctors would be a wake-up call to folks my size, I'm personally not fazed by the F-word at all.

I'm not every fat woman, though; as the co-author of a book about fat acceptance, I'm deliberately reclaiming the word. I use it casually and unabashedly because ...

As usual the underlying motive of the demonization of fat has been motivated by politics and profit. The New Labour years have by coincidence seen a spate of developments in fat busting drugs. So follow the money and the trail leades out of taxpayers pockets as were are required to pay for "the increased healthcare costs caused by the obesity epidemic" and into the coffers of drug companies and people are prescribed statins, appetite suppressants. And the use of "obese" which means "extremely fat" in all dictionaries except the Newspeak dictionary used by the Politically Correct Though Police is in fact a judgemental and stigmatizing descriptor rather than a politically correct replacement for euphemisms like plump, bonnie, chubby or well rounded.

Illness, family responsibilities, disability, unemployment and old age are among the mst frequent causes of people having to look to the social security system for financial support.

The benefit system, founded by the Asquith / Lloyd George Liberal government early in the twentieth century and developed by governments of all parties since was designed to protect people who are temporarily or permanently incapable of providing for themselves. It has however evolved into a bureaucratic nightmare that traps people in poverty and worklessness. Often after a period of living on benefits claimants find they would be worse off by going bck to work. On top of that the system is expensive to manage and throws up irrational contradictions contradictions as people have to claim multiple benefits. Soon the stigma of being a "scrounger" wears off as claimants find themselves in good company among the long term workless.

Reform is ong overdue and Iain Duncan Smith has laid out a plan that is at least setting off in the right direction. He deserves a hearing.

Israel And Palestine - It's Kicking Off Again

Israel launched air strikes against targets in the Gaza Strip after a rocket fired from the Palestinian territory exploded in the city of Ashkelon.

The strikes targeted a site in Gaza City which, Israely military intelligence claims, is used by Hamas the Islamist resistance group. The area is also thought to be and entry and exit point for tunnels along the Gaza's southern border with Egypt that are used for smuggling food and necesseties, consumer goods and weapons to the beleagured Palestinian enclave.

Palestinian medical workers said four people were slightly wounded by flying debris in Gaza City.

Palestinian insurrectionists in Gaza had fired a rocket into Ashkelon on Israel's Mediterranean coast earlier on Friday, breaking windows in an apartment block and damaging a number of cars parked in a residential area.

No injuries resulted from the blast but the attack ended over a year of freedom from conflict for the city, the closes Israeli community to the sector of Palestine ruled by Hamas.

Once again we see the ineffectual efforts of western leaders to broker a peace deal in this area being sneered at by the actions of both the Israelis and Palestinians. Is it not time the west simply backed off, secured our own borders and let people who refuse to try to live peacefully side by side get on with slaughtering each other.

And that applies to everywhere in the world, not just the middle east.

We have witnessed diplomatic rifts with many foreign allies and recently seen the new UK Prime Minister, a man who has impressed many Americans with his intelligence and willingness to speak plainly, distancing Britain from the Obama administration.

Quite a list of achievements them for a President many people said was too inexperienced to do the job.

The divisions in America are eeper than most people imagine. While the "Birther" controversy centered on Obama's eligibility to serve as President because of his birthplace or parentage continues, many more people who are prepared to let that go are becoming more and more concerned with the Presidential back story or lack of one. Nothing Obama tells us about his family makes sense, worse his statements are often self contradictory. Apart from releasing his long form birth certificate, an act which would necessarily conform his eligibility or prove that he lied to the American people in order to get elected, Obama continues to refuse to release school and college records or anything that would prove he is who he says he is.

Thus we only have testimony from people who attended the colleges Obama claims to have attended and were enrolled in the classes Obama claims he was enrolled in during the years he claims he was in those classes. Unfortunately none of those people recall a Barack Hussein Obama, Barry Obama, Barry Soetoro or Barry Dunham (yes, Obama has more aliases than a small time criminal) or anybody who even looked like him as a classmate.

From a comment on a post in Fellowship Of Minds here is what one of the people who should have been a classmate of Obama at Colombia University writes on the subject:

Even stranger still, the Wall Street Journal reported in its editorial pages back in 2008 that Fox News called 400 of my classmates and they could not find one student who had ever met Obama at Columbia. Adding to the mystery is the fact that President Obama has sealed all of his college records at Occidental and Columbia. All of this should be troubling to every American, no matter what your political beliefs.

Strange indeed, especially when you consider that President Barack Hussein Obama is still spending huge amounts of money paying expensive law firms to prevent law suits challenging his eligibility from being heard in court be getting them dismissed on dubious technicalities, if using injunctions to prevent release of information being sought under Freedom Of Information laws and is ramming through the legislative process unconstitutional laws by by - passing the debating chamber and signing new bills into law by executive order.

Is it any wonder America is divided and seems to be lurching towards civil unrest.

It is not uncommon in a democracy for the people to mistrust their leaders but can a nation whose leader does not consider himself accountable to the people, who regards himself as an Emperor rather than a servant of the state continue to call itself a democracy.

Benefit System Needed Reform

Iain Duncan Smith's proposals for remorm of the benefit system is long overdue. The system has been crazy for several decades, remember the Boswells, the scrounging family of scouse scallies in the TV series bread? They were comedy characters but not that far removed from reality.

In some areas, thanks to the decline of the industrial base and a lack of foresight on the part of politicians and their advisers there are now third generation jobless who, knowing how to work the system, are living quite comfortably on benefits.

An article in today's Daily Telegraph,Outmoded Benefits System Needed Reform tackles the dreaded subject of welfare reform and reminds us of what Mark Twain is supposed to have said about the weather. Everyone talks about it; nobody does anything about it. And for a good reason. Radical plans that look good on paper fall apart once civil servants start doing the sums; even slight tweaks to the system create a political backlash, so politicians shrink from real reforms and take refuge in window dressing.

Human beings have a need for meaningful work however. While it might serve the agenda of corporate profits to replace workers with machines the process does neither communities nor individuals any favours.

Accrording to the Panic Merchant In Chief, Barack Hussein Obama, the oil spill that followed the blow out on BP's Deepwater Horizon rig was America's greatest ecological disaster ever. As usual Obama was ill informed and wrong. The spill was not the biggest the world's oceans have ever known, not even the biggest in the Gulf Of Mexico (see our link below) Not a trace of the 1979 oil spill now remains and nobody remembers it.

Americans, particularly those who supported Obama just love mass hysteria so it was inevitable the spill would be inflated into an outbreak of fear and panic. Ironically the Obama supporters who prided themselves on being rational and not prone to the idiocies embraced by the religious right have shown they were actually loopier. The just needed a messiah to follow who ticked all the politically correct boxes.

With Obama to lead them they have panicked about global warming, succumbed to swine flu hysteria and not quaked in fear of Oilmageddon as the panicmonger - in chief whipped up the frenzy.

We often used to ask during the Presidencies of George W Bush and Bill Clinton, "Just who do the bloody Americans think they are." It was translated into many languages around the world as representatives of the USA tried to ride roughshod over diplomatic protocols.

Many deluded people thought things might change when Obama assumed power but now as we watch this vain, vacuous man strutting around the globe with all the pomp and swagger of an African village tyrant it is becoming clear those of us who warned things would be worse rather than better under Obama were right.

As well as displaying a woeful lack of leadership Obama has sought throughout the crisis to make political capital from it by demonising the British. When this failed he then sought to implicate BP in the release of the Lockerbie Bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi. In response to a completely unsupported allegation that BP had lobbied the British government to push for the release of Al Megrahi to help the company secure lucrative oil deals with Libya.

Did Obama OK The Release Of The Lockerbie Bomber

The Daily Stirrer has commented many times on the racist nature of the Obama administration and the detestation of "white" people in general and the British in particular that President Barack Hussein Obama can barely be bothered to conceal. No matter we say, Britain benefits little from the so called "special relationship", the myth of which has been perpetuated by recent Labour Prime Ministers in order to justify their sycophancy towards The White House that has allowed them to pretend they were major players on the world stage.

It is of no matter that the USA does not regard its relationship with Britain as of any great importance. American interests lie in other directions and so do Britain's. In fact the perpetual sucking up of Blair and Brown to The White House was a national embarrassment. That said, it is good to be on friendly terms diplomatically with the USA, we may be as someone famously said "two nations divided by a single language" but we still have a lot in common with American people even if our cultures have diverged.

The Obama Presidency however has given our government very good reasons to distance itself from America. To of the list is the President's dislike of Britain and the British that has led to him telling blatant and ridiculous lies about his Kenyan connections in order to make Brain look bad. Then there have been the calculated insults to Gordon Brown, the cringeworthy episode in which the Obama's took their ghetto manners to Buckingham Palace and behaved as if they were the hosts and The Queen and Prince Phillip guests.

In recent months there has been his behaviour over the role of BP in the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill and now his trying to involve BP in the controversy surrounding the release of the Lockerbie bomber.

We British then have no reason at all to continue subscribing to the deification of Obama because of his colour. The man does not like our country so we are justified in kicking him hard and often, even kicking him when he is down.So let's start putting the boot in now.

Obama's faux outrage about the release of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi by the Scottish administration is hypocritical in the extreme. The Daily Stirrer commented at the time of the release that it would never have gone ahead without the approval of The White House. Thus the summoning of former UK Justice Minister Jack Straw and Scottish Justice Minister Kenny MacKaskill to Washington where they would be required to give evidence before the US Senate is not only a breach of diplomatic protocol, it is also a chap stunt, a piece of political showboating from a politician who has found his celebrity lifestyle is not enough to save his failing Presidency.

Take a look at what top left wing boadsheet and long time supporters of Obama, The Guardian reported on the matter of a letter sent to Scottish ministers by a senior diplomat at the US embassy in London last August, eight days before Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was released from prison because he was dying from inoperable prostate cancer:

Obama's administration has refused to allow publication of the letter, in which the US says allowing Megrahi to live at home in Scotland would be "far preferable" to sending him back to Libya under the prisoner transfer deal brokered by former prime minister Tony Blair in 2007. Although Megrahi was allowed to go home to die in Tripoli, Scottish officials believe this undermines Obama's vigorous criticisms of the decision to free Megrahi earlier this month, when he said he was left "surprised, disappointed and angry" by the Libyan's release. The Lockerbie scandal has just become even murkier. According to a Sunday Times report yesterday “the US government secretly advised Scottish ministers that it would be “far preferable” to free the Lockerbie bomber than jail him in Libya.” The newspaper obtained a leaked document which reveals that Richard LeBaron, deputy head of the US embassy in London, had written to Alex Salmond, Scottish First Minister, ahead of the release of the Lockerbie bomber. The correspondence indicates that the Obama administration’s opposition to the “compassionate” release of the Lockerbie bomber may not have been as clear-cut as it has subsequently claimed. The Sunday Times is now behind a paywall so we cannot link to the original. All we can say is it is a leaked document and has not yet been acknowledged by the US government as authentic. If there is nothing to hide however, nothing in the contents that would reveal President Obama as a posturing hypocrite there is unlikely to be anything that would threaten the security of either nation. If there is nothing to hide there is no reason for The White House withhold publication.

So Obama is blocking release of the documents, we must assume, because the contents would embarrass him. Well he has a track record for blocking access to document that should be in the public domain so nothing unexpected there. Bear in mind that the said letter, the full text of which has now been leaked to the Sunday Times, was written in August 2009, months after Obama had assumed the Presidency. So he cannot play his usual get out of jail card by blaming George W Bush.

Britain enjoys special relationships with Canada, Australia and India, a nation David Cameron visits this week. Our coalition government would do well to build on those ties, particularly in our dealings with India, a rapidly emerging economic, industrial and technological power. We can safely cut Obama adrift, if it sours future relations with America that will only impact on the ability of future Labour Prime Ministers to delude themselves they are world statesmen. By the time Obie leave office in 2012 however he will be so unpopular we will be able to pick up with his successor the international relations we enjoyed with the Bush, Clinton and Reagan administrations.

Those strange people who like to style themselves "scientists" are a tad upset at the way their elaborately constructed climate change scam which they were so sure would help their tribe achieve world domination has collapsed under objective scrutiny.

We have to give credit where credit is due however and the scientists deserve credit for persistence if nothing else. Having endured similar hmiliations with the failure of the swine flu scam, the mad cow disease scam, the AIDS scam, the oil is running out scam, the water shortage scam, the ozone layer scam and a hot of others they asre still pushing their fear and panic line "catastrophe is imminent, only the scientists can save the world" line.

In Is Humanity Prepared For The Worst
Science writer ian Sample considers how scientists might prepare humanity to face the challenges the future will present us with. The catastrophe's he lines up are climate change, crop failures due to over - intensive farming, designer killer viruses, disastrous but unforseen consequences of attempts to reverse climate change by geo - engineering and oceanic pollution by algae due to nutrient rich chemical outflows from rivers, sewers, industrial plants etc. And again the line is we must give the scientists all the money and expensive toys they demand because only science can save us from such problems.

As most of these catastrophes are likely to be created by the consequences of ill though-out scientific research perhaps we should prepare by killing all scientists. It will be much cheaper and safer than trusting them.

Selection By Stealth or Sound Common Sense

The Education Minister in the coalition government Michael Gove was accused yesterday of introducing a policy that will allow schools to select pupils A leaked government document questioned the future of the admissions code that stops schools favouring children they believe are more likely to produce better results.

Oh horror of horrors. Selecting pupils? That will only lead to the destruction of comprehensive education, the production line education system created by Labour and their politically correct left wing apparatchiks in the academic environment with the sole aim of churning out streams of identical, unthinking, state dependent Labour voters.

What the fuck is wrong with selection. In schools now, and I am a lecturer in a local college so I'm qualified to comment, we have a culture of anti intellectualism. The pupils who want to learn, who are bookish, quiet, introverted, sensitive, ginger haired, in any way different tend to have a miserable time. The yobs rule and the staff pander to them for the sake of a quiet life.

What was wrong with the old Grammar Schools when the intelligent, the top fifteen or twenty percent were segregated and encouraged to perform according to their ability. Did such an education do either myself, John or Ian any harm? More to the point did it do our friends any harm to attend a "Secondary Modern." Many of them went on to do well in life, some did not do so well but the same can be said of our old classmates.

One former colleague of mine, Ollie Chadwick was always one of the brightest boys in our year. He did not go to University, many pupils leaving grammar school with A levels in the 1960s did not. I don't know what went wrong for Ollie but he died a few years ago, just turned sixty, a shambling wreck, an alcoholic and compulsive gambler who, at the end of an afternoon in the bookies was always trying to beg a pound so he could by a loaf of bread and eat.

A boy who lived a short walk from where I grew up but in the council houses, is a millionaire now. He did not go to grammar school being of a more practical mindset. The phrase "good with hands" would have featured on his school reports. He was not bad at business either and is a millionaire now with a second hand car showroom and a solid engineering firm that specialises in making engine parts for classic cars. He served a technical apprenticeship in the aircraft industry but the skills he gained there and the academic knowledge gained through day release and night school equipped him to combine his love of cars with his skills as an engineer.

I know a young man, Ian knows him much better having watched him draw his first breaths, who is a brilliant musician and artist but at school was always a thoughtful, sensitive boy. One of his former teachers, now dead, was an old friend of mine. He told me of that lad, "He has a brilliant brain and is a really gifted artist. If ever there was a boy who should have gone to grammar school it is him. But he struggled to survive in the comprehensive system, he was bullied, attracted more bullying by trying to appeal to the little thugs and then tried to survive by becoming the clown, the dunce. Then in the fourth year he changed.

I know what happened. His Dad finally got though to him the notion that you have to defend yourself. And believe me a young man could have no better teacher than our Ian, intelligent, cultured and rather short though he is. There is no point trying to reason with morons, they only understand violence. By that time however that young man's school career had been ruined.

The price we have paid for the incessant experiments in social engineering in education is so visible in the classes I teach now. So many late developers, people taking Vocational and External Degree courses at the college as they work part time or are supported by a partner, so many of them with good brains, so many, when they can be coaxed into talking, with the same story to tell: "If you were good in school, if you enjoyed lessons and were keen to learn you were the outsider. You had no mates, you were the creep, the weirdo."

So many of them are people who should have gone to the Grammar School or Technical College. To be in an environment where people wrere not queers or homos or mentalists because they liked to read books or would rather sit with a sketchbook or practice a musical instrument than play football or go out with a gang looking for trouble"

So what is so bad about selection. It does not segregate by class or income as the current system does. It reduces segregation, promotes social mobility. Pupils are allowed to develop in their own way, at their own pace. Highflyers at school like Ollie do not always develop into successful adults. Others do not reveal their full potential until in their twenties of thirties. We need a system that educates individuals rather than trying to create clones.

We could go a long way towards reducing our public sector deficit if we simply left the EU, it costs us a fucking fortune. Europhiles will shriek and recoil in horror at the thought of course. Far from bringing under control the EU's runaway spending fans of EU expansion, integration and federalisation would love to bring in to the community more third world countries like Turkey so its enormous population can be subsidised by German, British and French taxpayers.

Bullying Telephone Debt Collectors

A little known consequence of the global financial crisis has been that the banks which own many of the major credit card brands, Barclaycard, MBNA, Goldfish, have bundled up bad debt and sold it on for about 10p in the pound to some pretty unpleasant people who are now contracting telephone bullies to recover as much asd they can. As the thuigs who run the debt collection services are paid on commission they have a huge incentive to screw as much as they can out of you by methods including, but not limited to, intimidation and threats of bankruptcy, loss of home, trashing your credit rating with Experian, Equifax etc. whose state sanctioned records are ‘supervised’ by the Information Commissioners Office (in the UK).

Experian and Equifax run a system that effectively has by passed the legal system. To use a colloquialism they are a law unto themselves. The Debtor company decides you are guilty on the say so of one of their ‘members’ and that is you screwed for credit or finance for the next five years or until the default notice disappears off your record.

It is not a case of you are innocent until proved guilty, you are guilty until you can prove that you do not owe these characters any money. And even if you prove you owe them nothing, whether they will clean your credit record is touch and go. People who carry out such admin tasks cannot be employed on commission only as can the bullies who tell you Lefty and the Boys will be round if you don't pay.

If you are unfortunate enough to be targeted by one of these ‘debt recovery companies’ here's how to handle it. Do not get into any telephone discussion with them. Keep everything in writing. Ask for a copy of the Credit Agreement you have allegedly signed with them, or if they say they have bought the debt ask for a copy of the assignment document. Invariably they will not be able to produce such a document, because they rely on intimidation tactics to divert attention away from the due process of Law which they are trying to circumvent.

Now we must add a caveat, if you take out credit particularly now when the mainstream banks are reluctant to lend, you should think very carefully about it and whether you can really afford to service the debt. When indebted to a licenced bank or credit company if your circumstances change you should be able to rely on the Law to protect you losing everything. There is nothing to stop respectable(ish) finance companies from selling debts however, in fact despite all the politicians' promises to tighten regulations there is still absolutely nothing to stop a bank selling your debt to the kind of chancers and scumbags who seek to make a quick out of people’s misery and humiliation.

There are a few market leaders out there that take the biscuit, remember the ‘Party of The People’, those progressive lefties of New Labour were proposing to give ‘bailiff’ companies the right to break into your home? A far cry from the 1920’s when political activists in the Communist and Labour Parties banded together to prevent evictions. Now we have to rely on consumer protection lawsUsually a swift letter to the company concerned citing The Prevention of Harassment Act 1997 sec 2 usually does the trick.

To terminate a telephone call from an aggressive debt collector:

Tell them you are recording the conversation for the purposes of training

If they are telephoning from India, tell them that what they are doing is illegal, you want their name and department and that you will be contacting the Police when you have finished the call.

And remember, these thugs hate to do business in writing. EU Federalisation By Stealth

Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan asked in his blog recently "What constitutes a state?"

The accepted definition in International Law is in the opening paragraph of the 1933 Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States:

"The state as a person of international law should possess the following qualifications: (a) a permanent population; (b) a defined territory; (c) government; and (d) capacity to enter into relations with the other states."

The European Union whose member states' voters overwhelmingly reject the notion of a single European superstate already has a permanent population and well defined territorial boundaries. It also has a government of sorts, the tyrannical bureaucrats of Brussels and the toothless parliament in Stasbourg could not be considered anything else. Now the EU has closed down item (d) too . The European Constitution Lisbon Treaty, which came into effect on 1 December 2009, gave the EU “legal personality”: that is, the right to sign treaties as a single entity. Under the Lisbon agreement the acts of the EU government supersede those laws passed by the elected representatives of member states. Now, we hear, the EU has been formally recognised by the United Nations. It has a single foreign policy from which member states cannot opt out even though the central authority may be riding roughshod over the national interests of individual member states in pursuit of the interests of the bureaucratic dictatorship. Put all thse things together and they add up to “capacity to enter into relations with other states”.

So there you have it. After being rejected by the voters of those nations that were allowed to vote, France and The Netherlands, the single European supertstate has been brough into being by stealth in what must be the greatest act of political mendacity and deception ever.

British Troops Will Leave Afghanistan by 2014 Says Defence Minister

"About bloody time" you might think as you read the headline. This pointless war has dragged on for 9 years now and has cost more than enough in British lives.

A document leaked to The Independent On Sunday reportedly states the withdrawal of NATO troops is to begin within months.

The document states, allegedly: "The international community expressed its support for the President of Afghanistan's objective that the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) should lead and conduct military operations in all provinces by the end of 2014."

It goes on to pledge that the international community will continue to "provide the support necessary to increase security during this time, and the continued support in training, equipping and providing interim financing to the ANSF at every level to take on the task of securing their country".

There could be another aspect to this policy leak besides demonstrating the coalition government's reluctance to keep pouring money into the fiery pit of this unwinnable war. While the official line on the US / UK Special relationship is that David Cameron and Barack Obama have a good working relationship the signs that Cameron does not rate Obama as a political equal are becoming blatantly obvious.

This latest move then could be a way of letting Obama know British support is not guaranteed.

The Independent's story comes after Foreign Secretary William Hague hinted that British regiments would be leaving Afghanistan by 2014 although Mr. Hague stated clearly the government was not "setting a timetable for what happens over the next few years".

The timing of the leak could be an attempt to put down a marker for the International Conference on Afghanistan next Tuesday (20 July, 2010) at which US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and foreign ministers from more than 70 countries will discuss future strategy for the failed middle eastern state. With violence escalationg in Iraq again despite a continuing but low key American military presence this news is another blow for the beleagued Obama administration

Prime Minister David Cameron has previously vowed to have troops out by 2015. It looks at though he meant it. With casualties rising however and the war looking increasingly futile and unwinnable and the urgency of the financial situation it is had to see what realistic alternative was open to the government.

Did BP Lobby For Lockerbie Bomber's Release

By now we should all know that anybody who supports the politics of the "progressive left" in either the UK's Labour Party or any of its other manifestations is insane, not just clinically insane but totally stark raving, banging their head on the wall, chewing the carpet, rubbing shit in their hair and eating gravel for breakfast bonkers.

The latest measure of politically correct socialist insanity has come via the accusation that oil giant BP lobbied Gordon Brown's government for the release of the Lockerbie Bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi. We hope this is a total fabrication because BP, already in trouble for the Deepwater Horizon oil rig's exploding and millions of gallons of crude oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico from the uncapped well, may not be able to withstand a new crisis.

To try to distance the British government and in particular the coalition from the accusation Sir Nigel Sheinwald, the British Ambassador to Washington has called the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi a “mistake”, in what can only be seen as an attempt by the Coalition Government to disown the aberrations of the Labour / Scottish Nationalist administration in Scotland.

Kenny MacAskill, the fruitcake who serves in the Scottish administration as Justice Secretary, is the champion of criminals rather than of victims. On assuming office he told the Scottish Police Federation conference the principle that the justice ministry and the police existed to protect the public from lawless elements was an anachronism. His perception of the role of justice was to ensure the police were be recruited from a diversity of ethnic and sexual backgrounds.

Under MacAskill's "progressive" regime the prison gates have been opened; recently he announced a plan to abolish all jail sentences of less than six months but was was frustrated by the Scottish parliament which settled for a compromise three months. Naturally when he found the fate of the world’s most notorious prisoner, the only surviving Lockerbie bomber, rested in his hands, the outcome was a foregone conclusion. By freeing a man convicted of 270 murders he would pave the way for placing the "human rights" of all criminals ahead of the rights of law abiding citizens to live peacefully and unmolested.

To be fair to the Labour government they had negotiated a low key Prisoner Transfer with Libya. Instead MacKaskill who is so righteous a paternalistic authoritarian he knows political correctness must not only be done but must be seen to be done, opted for a photo opportunity rich “compassionate release”, in view of the prognosis that Megrahi had less than three months to live. A whole year later and Abdelbaset is emphatically still with us even though he will not be entering any charity walks any time soon. How the families of Lockerbie victims feel about this can only be imagined, but in a politically correct justice system victims rights have never amounted to much against the "rights" of perpetrators and the self righteousness of those who dispense political correctness.

BP’s role in pressing for a decision on the prisoner transfer agreement with Libya, to facilitate its acquiring oil exploration rights from the Gaddafi regime, has now become common knowledge at the very worst possible time for the company. Barack Obama is fighting to reassert himself after a disastrous eighteen months since taking office, BP temporary capping of the Gulf of Mexico oil leak is not good news for Obama because while it has, temporarily at least, stopped oil flowing into the waters of the Gulf it was achieved in spite of rather than with the support of the Obama administration.

A number of Democrat senators are demanding an investigation into whether BP played any part in the release of Megrahi. If any evidence to that effect surfaces, BP is toast. The Obama administration will take it out with the help of a predatory-looking Exxon and the vultures of Wall Street. That would make Obama look strong again, provide distraction from his other failures and it would do a lot towards restoring America's pre - eminence in the oil trade.

Maybe it is time for the English, Welsh and Northern Irish to decide if we want devolution from Scotland.

More Graduates, Less Graduate Jobs

Vionce Cable the coalition government's minister responsible for business and higher education has kicked off the biggest shake up in University financing in the past four decades. Since the vast and rapid expansion of higher education begun bt the Wilson government in the 1960 there has been constant growth in University funding, the number of University places available and the amount of government money flowing into Universities.

Eventually, inevitably (stimulus spending supporters please note) the University system became too expensive for the state to support it. Tony Blair's Labour government, while blethering about everybody having the right to a University education introduced tuition fees and student loans to that instead of the state paying for most student's education, the students left University saddled with a hige dept that would blight their lives and careers. At the same time more and more school leavers were being steered towards a University education but due to the depletion of the manufacturing base there were fewer and fewer suitable jobs.

All the while Labour were in power they kept muttering about the knowledge economy as if simply having attained a University degree was a marketable asset. In reality were were spending fortunes on educating people to be call centre clerks, shelf fillers and burger flippers.

Somehow the crazy situation had to be addressed. In an economy forced to face the reality that perpetual and perpetually accelerating economic growth is impossibe we had to face the reality that churning out ever greater numbers of graphic designers, journalists, art historians, sociologists and music teachers was futile when we already had a surplus of that type of qualified person but were importing plumbers, mechanics, electricians, joiners, bricklayers and engineering operatives from eastern Europe.

We had gone beyond saturation point for graduates.

That would have been quite an easy problem but the more pressing business of reducing the unsustainable public sector deficit creaed by Labour's insane spending and loonytoons economic policies put a different complexion on it. So what will Cable do?

Comparing the existing system of tuition fees to a "poll tax" that graduates paid regardless of their income, the skills secretary argued it was fairer for people to pay according to their earning power. He said: "It surely can't be right that a teacher or care worker or research scientist is expected to pay the same graduate contribution as a top commercial lawyer or surgeon or City analyst whose graduate premium is so much bigger."

Graduates earned on average £100,000 more than non-graduates in their life-time, Cable said, and there are significant premiums for degrees such as medicine.

Cable asked Lord Browne, the former CEO of BP who was conducting a review of student finance, to look at a variable graduate tax tied to earnings. Low earners may end up paying less than they currently do for their degrees while those with high incomes pay more.

The graduate tax would replace the current system, under which the government lends money to students to cover the cost of their degree courses and graduates pay this back once they start earning more than £15,000.

Phasing out tuition fees is a crucial part of Liberal Democrat education policy. Any moves by the coalition to raise fees – or even keep the status quo – could prove divisive. Lib Dem MPs will be allowed to abstain from any vote on fees under the coalition agreement.

The Minister warned the Labour government's target of extending higher education to 50% of the population was unrealistic and likely to be scrapped. Figures from the university admissions service, Ucas, revealed the pressure on university places: universities have received more than 660,000 applications and a record number of students likely to be denied a place this autumn.

Cable told an audience of vice- chancellors at South Bank University in London: "What we have is an urgent problem. Universities are going to have to ask how they can do more for less. There will probably be less public funding per student … quite possibly fewer students coming straight from school to do three-year degrees." Universities had to be prepared for a period of contraction. "Britain is a poorer country than two years ago and future spending had to be adjusted accordingly."

Cable's proposals mark a departure from the current sytem of University funding and the biggest change to the university system since the early 1990s, when at least 40 polytechnics became universities and higher education was expanded.

Weight Watchers On The NHS - So What's Wrong With Homeopathy?

I read today the NHS will in future be required to fund fatties attendance at Weight Watchers clubs.

Now I would not claim be be an expert on weight loss, a sensible diet and long walks have always kept me in fairly good shape, but I do know none of my wife's friends who ever enrolled at Weight Watchers kept the weight off once they had left. Which means Weight Watcher have found the perfect profit making machine, everyone becomes a customer for life or for as long as they are prepared to be ripped off every week. And I suspect many people will be happy to be ripped off every week forever if the NHS are picking up the tab.
Medical science spokespeople have welcomed this development however.
Makes one wonder why they get so het up about homeopathy. Nobody I know has ever told me weight watchers worked for them and if anybody did I'd know they were lying. One or two people of my acquaintance (yes I do know some tree huggers) swear homeopathy has worked for them and while I have no reason to believe it I have no reason to doubt them either.

This is both true and a lie, true in that no fault was found, a lie because the reason no fault was found is that to examine the scientific work was outside the Russell panel's terms of reference. Climate Change: Thoughts On The Russell Report

There has been a lot of exitement among the science community over the Russell report on the Climategate Scandal this week. We expected as much, the science community or Church of Scienceology as those of us inclined to sarcasm like to call them are a shaalow, excitable lot who are apt to lose control of their emotions at the slightest provocation. Rational thinking and controlled, objective analysis is not their forte. Let's look at a few claims made by the Science zealots: First; the report "exonerated" the scientists involved with the East Anglia University Climate Research Unit (CRU). This is not true, it is a complete misrepresentation of what the report avctually says:
We note that much of the challenge to CRU‘s work has not always followed the conventional scientific method of checking and seeking to falsify conclusions or offering alternative hypotheses for peer review and publication. We believe this is necessary if science is to move on, and we hope that all those involved on all sides of the climate science debate will adopt this approach.

So they did not finmd the "science" flawless, they found the bits of the "science" the panel's terms of reference required them to look at did not reaveal anyevidence of dishonest. But as we al know absence of evidence is not evidence of absence and if the report did not look at everything their conclusion whist true is not an aquittal.
Here is a quote from the responsible minister in the UK Parliament when presenting the report to the House:

Muir Russell's independent review is not looking at the science it is looking at allegations about malpractice. As for the science itself, I have not actually seen any evidence of any flaw in the science but I am hoping, later this week, to announce the chair of a panel to reassess the science and make sure there is nothing wrong.

So they are going to be loking at the methodology again, this time without the work being subjected to the relentless scrutiny of the British media and blogosphere. Here's the bit on the fabrication allegation. Remember - the allegation is that Professor Phil Jones, who resigned due to allegations of scientific skulduggery and was hurredly reinstated following a dubious claim that the report had "exonerated" him, inserted a groundless statement that McKitrick's findings were "statistically insignificant". Here's what Jones said in his evidence to Russell:
The basis for this statement is that if the CRUTEM3 trend is reduced by the factor claimed by MM2004, the land-based record then becomes incompatible with the ocean and the satellite record. MM2004 make no mention of this in their paper. In writing Chapter 3 of AR4 the author team were mindful of this. MM2004‘s analysis of the land surface temperature record is completely at odds with the rest of the surface and lower tropospheric temperature records. MM2004 also fails to take into account the effects of changes in the atmospheric circulation.

And the panel said:
Having read most of the relevant papers... we observe a consistence of view amongst those who disagree with MM2004 that has been sustained over the last 6 years, that the large scale organisation of atmospheric circulation produces a spatially integrated response to forcing. Although we do not comment on the relative merits of the two views, we see no justification of the view that that this response was ?invented, or even that its various expressions in the response to reviewer Gray or the final text are fundamentally different.

Jones appears to have shifted his position from "McKitrick's findings are statistically insignificant" to "McKitrick's findings conflict with other evidence". Whether this is true or not is irrelevant. What matters is that Jones when challenged was unable to provide any support for the claim that was inserted in the IPCC text. This means the allegation of fabrication is uncontestable. What should also demand closer scrutiny is the apparent attempt to hide behind joint authorship - the finger of blame can't be pointed at Jones because lots of people wrote that chapter.
So in examining two very brief findings we learn that the report's terms of reference did not require it to report on the quality of the CRU's work and that in a manner typical of the academic community Jones and his associates were judged by their peers who closed ranks to protect colleagues and friernds.
And on the most serious allegation against Jones, that of e-mails Jones asked colleagues to delete so that their contents were not available to sceptics using the Freedom Of Information act to scrutinixe the work of the CRU, well the inquiry did not get round to asking him about that even though he had previously admitted doing this in an interview with BBC television.
Is anyone surprised this whole exercise was a cover up? No we're not.

The Real Danger To America?

I love this quotation.
"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president."
"The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.
The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president."

It is alleged to have been translated into English from an article appearing in the Czech Republic as published in the Prager Zeitung of 28 April 2010 but seems to have been in circulation on the web since before that. In reality then we do not know who the author is (I suspect Bill Clinton) but spend time in the coment threads of any US political blogs and it is clear how deeply the man who promised to unite that country has divided it. There is no middle ground, no debate. Supporters of Obama and those in the anti - Obama camp just yell at each other that anyone who does not agree with their world view is an (a) idiot (b) right/left wing nut job (c) a Marxist / fascist.
When the passage featured on a Yahoo forum query titledWhat Is Wrong With Barack Obama it triggered par - for - the - course responses from either side of the political spectrum. The best response, chosen by the moderators came from a commenter using the name Greenman.

Obama appeared upon the national political scene as an extremely liberal senator from Illinois. Although his congressional record is basically empty and his own assessment of his judgment was that he was too busy running for public office to do much of substance in his senate career. He skipped committee meetings and was absent from the senate voting secessions about a fourth of the time; however Obama had his surface appeal to fall back on. Bush was not only disliked due to his awkwardness in communication and the Iraqi war only added to his political burden. In retrospect, any truly fresh face was desirable and perfect to the DNC to be their choice to represent their party. Now with President Bush to blame for all that is wrong, this man was a sure thing in the race to the Whitehouse.
Now this man who has never revealed his credentials, except perhaps to a secret few, and has ridden behind his veil of secrecy into the position of Commander-in-Chief of the world’s most powerful military; this pitiful, annoying pipsqueak of a man who would not make a pimple on a private’s *** has used his position to fire a four-star general for allegedly saying things, the truthfulness of which has not been challenged, but which hurt the feelings of this elitist prince of fools who now holds the catbird seat in our government.

The implosion of the Obama Presidency could be good news for the rest of the world however. While America is obsessed with internicine conflict the rest of the world can get on with putting right the global economy.

Higher Education Is The Path To Unemployment

The news that there are seventy applicants for each job vacancy requiring a new graduate from University, though it is indicative of a dire situation in the jobs market, should not be interpreted as meaning there is only one job for each graduate seeking to enter the world of paid employment in a job related to the subject they studied. It will be presented as such but should not be. Even so, when each graduate feels it necessary to send off job applications in industrial quantities knowing that most will not even be read it is quite soul destroying for a young person who has been told a University education is the path to a better career and more fulfilling life.
One of the problems we know face has arisen from the obsession of "progressive" politics with University education. In reality we only need around 15% to 20% of school leavers entering University. That is not to say many more should not go through higher education in some way. A University education is highly focused on academic learning thus it is ideal for teachers, thinkers, theorists. When I left Grammar school at 16 and took up an engineering craft apprenticeship I was taking the same route as thousands of others. We all continued our education though day release and night school, some until they had completed their five year apprenticeship, others like myself following the path right through to Higher National Diploma standard. Some of the best and most creative engineers I have worked alongside had this educational background, a solid understanding of theory enriched with practical, hands on experience.
We abandoned that very successful approach to training future generations for several reasons. One was that academics gained too much influence with politicians unable to tell the difference between a genuine desire to spread knowledge and facilitate social mobility and what was really nothing but self interested empire building.
Next we allowed companies to shirk their training responsibilities. When some sharp shit accountant decided training was pointless because it was easier and cheaper to recruit fully trained staff from rivals many businessmen thought this very clever and followed suit. Eventually the cost of training made those socially responsible companies that retained a commitment to it unable to compete. The burden of training was shifted to the state. It is a task, like most tasks, at which the state does not perform well.
So basically the problems graduates now face in finding suitable employment are mostly down to short term thinking and bureaucratic empire building. Is it any surprise we are up shit creek?

Amazon Takes On Sainsbury's - Digital Economy Killing Jobs?

We are not against progress at this publication nor are we against technology. There has to come a point however where, when presented with some new development and told it will make life better in many ways for us all, we take the advice of Marcus Tullius Cicero and ask "Cui Bono?" Who benefits? One such case is exemplified by the expansion of Amazon into the grogeries business.
Amazon.co.uk has today started selling groceries from its website. You can get over 22,000 product lines including ready meals, fresh meat (including a whole lamb for £120) and household brands such as Marmite. According to James Leeson, the ‘director of grocery’ at Amazon UK, the company wants its website to be the place where customers “can find and discover any product they want to buy online”.
OK you say, Tesco and Asda sell books and CDs, why shouldn't Amazon sell corn flakes? Quite, were it only the sales of the big retailers that suffered why indeed should Amazon not sell groceries. To get an idea of how damaging this trend is however we need to take a wider view. Remember if you can the end of the 1950s when supermarkets were few and far between and every neighbourhood had its own shops. These were not just grocers, but greengrocers, butchers, fish mongers, shops selling newspapers, magazines sweets and tobacco, ironmongers, bakers and a host of other trades some just providing a living for the owner's family, some employing several people. Every town big enough to boast a town centre of a "High Street" had its bookshops, stationers, craft and hobby shops, furniture warehouses, a selection of clothing and shoe retailers, electrical shops, a record store (very American, the record business), all sorts of specialist businesses and an array of stalls and lock ups selling flowers, snacks, pet foods, gifts, second hand tat and almost anything else. Now apart from the social aspect of that system which is gone forever we have lost countless jobs. In Britain when the one - stop hypermarkets were spreading during the 1980s and 90s news programmes would report "XYZ Stores today announced a new Hypermarket to be built in Slaghoughton will create 400 new jobs." How many jobs would be lost in businesses forced to shut down or reduce staff by the arrival of a new retail force with which the independents could not hope to compete was never mentioned. An independent study by the Small Business Federation put it at double the number of jobs created. That is gone of course, we cannot turn back the clock nor undo what is done. It is ironic however that the same governments, the same political movements that shaped industrial and redevelopment policies to benefit the supermarkets are now so besotted with the digital economy they are prepared to shaft their former friends in order to help the new online retailers. The Daily Stirrer will shed no tears for Tesco and Co. but we do wonder what effect this will have on the remaining independent businesses. And in an era of economic crisis and rapidly rising joblessness we wonder about the sanity of politicians who are encouraging this expansion of online business to steam ahead at full throttle. All the talk of creating jobs and curtailing benefits to encourage people back to work starts to look a bit hypocritical when economic policy is geared towards encouraging those businesses whose success depends on destroying real jobs in the real world.

Two stories that sat next to each other on the BBC website today made me think once again about the insanity that seems to have infected the nations of tyhe developed world.

Radical Shake up For Benefit Payments
A raft of benefits have been cut or curbed as part of a radical shake up of the welfare system. These changes are designed to save £11bn per year by the end of the parliamentary term. That adds up to a quarter of the annual target of £40bn of spending cuts and tax rises by 2014-15.
We seem to have lost sight of what actually constitutes poverty. When the bleeding hears and the hand wringers start to bleat about the intolerable poverty being endured by people who do not have a broadband connection and a web enabled computer in their home, when the Labour government we ejected from office in May 2010 could spend 13 years wailing about child poverty and promising to abolish it without ever seeming to make the link between children living in poverty and adults who are lazy, self indulgent and not willing to work for a living, when we can hear talk of children who do not have the latest iPhone or iPod, designer trainers or hoodies or any of the other crap from which the modern pikey child or pikey adult derives all their self esteem are we talking about poverty or are we talking about a salve for the easily bruised consciences of middle class left wing guilt trippers?
Many of the cuts proposed in the budget presented by the Conservative / Liberal Democrat coalition will affect only across the board payments such as child benefit. Will the government have the good sense to make up the loss of genuine income for the needy so income is only reduced for more affluent recipients.
My wife and I received child benefit for both our children until they were sixteen. Throughout that time I was earning well above the national average despite living in a designated "low pay area." We now receive a winter fuel payment of £250 on account of my being disabled. My two colleagues in writing The Daily Stirrer both receive this as does my brother - in -law. We are all comfortably off and pay tax on our pensions. Why are these benefits paid across the board and not on a basis of need. None of the people I mentioned would complain if these benefits were removed, I know because I asked the others. We accept them because there is no easy way of opting out.
Over thirty years ago the Liberal Party as it was then, a tiny group in Parliament with about ten MPs despite polling over 10% of the vote, was campaigning for some social benefits to be linked to the PAYE tax code. It was a simple way of directing benefits to where they were needed. Since then we have had several massive projects involving the expenditure of £billions on Information Technology, all aimed at reforming the tax and benefits system. All have failed chaotically.
Is it not time the left, having had thirteen years to address this problem without doing anything more than whine about the horrors of deprived children who do not have iPhones, just shut the fuck up about unfairness. It's their bleeding heart incompetence, fuckwittery and failure to regulate the advertising industry's brainwashing of the public that caused most it.

Long before The Daily Stirrer showed up on the web, when John, Xav and I used to get together in the pub to put the world to rights one topic that came up quite fequently was the demonisation of smoking.
You watch," we'd say to each other and anyone else that might be listening, "these politically correct Nazis are on a world domination trip. With Hitler it was 'Today Poland, tomorrow the world. With the do goders it's 'Today ciggies, tomorrow the world.'"
We would think back to the 1970s, the public information campaigns about not smoking in front of the kids because it would set a bad example. We would say "Yes, when they have made smoking as unacceptable as murder, rape and paedophilia they'll start on drinking."

The Wisdom Of Urgent Deficit Reduction Reaches Obamaville

Not long ago I became involved in a thread with people who thought they were discussing economic philosophy. If fact they were simply doorstep evangelists for The Obamessiah and his lonytoons economics. As usual with people who cling to the notion that Obama is a competent President as tightly as working class Americans "cling to their guns and Bibles" (hey, I never said I don't hit below the belt) they make a wild statement and then defend it simply by saying no intelligent person could possibly disagree, in this case it was that everybody with any sense can see more "stimulus spending" (aka running up unsupportable debts to fund vanity projects) is essential to return the economy to growth.
A more realistic view and one that anyone with two brain cells that communicate with each other can see the validity of is that when you haven't enough money coming in to cover necessities (interest on existing debt, welfare, public sector salaries, the military, pensions etc.) it's a really really bad idea to put yourself in hock to loan sharks so you can buy a new car, a wardrobe full of designer clothes and maintain the luxury lifestyle.
At the G20 summit Obama demanded other nations buy American bonds to fund his insane spending committments. As has happened before the nations with surpluses are very well aware that economists are lying, there is no recovery in sight. public spending stimulates nothing. There is nothing to be gained by creating public sector jobs and spending money you don't have on state funded projects only deepens the problems.
I was asked to explain the basic philosophy of Keynesian economics having tried to make it clear there is a big difference between what Keynes wrote and was semi literates like Paul Krugman who have spent all their lives cocooned in academic institutions think Keynes wrote: i.e. governments can just print money to fund unlimited public spending.
Now I will explain something that is way beyond dimwits like Obama and fuckwits like Krugman. The central banks reduced the base rate, the rate at whuch they lend, to just above zero. The thinking was that by being able to borrow at such cheap rates the banks would be encouraged to lend to business and consumers at more commercial rates. The deficit economics of the Obama administration, Britains Labour government until a couple of months ago and other debtor nations mean that those governments have to sell bonds to fund their deficit requirements. So what do you think the banks are doing (bear in mind bankers might be shits but they're not stupid) Think it through, go on ...... I can hear the cogs grinding, you're getting there.....

The public sector produces nothing of value. Tax eaters do not earn revenue they only consume it. In a world of finite resources belief in infinite growth is stupidity. We have to limit the size of the public sector to what the private sector can support. It should be a no brainer.
The Chinese and Indians are no longer buying US Treasury Bonds. Get real. John De Roe (topmost link) did not know what the outcome of the G20 summit would be when he compiled his piece and when I decided to delay replying to questioners it was simply because I had too many other things on. I guess, because in the interval the world leaders have told President Big Ears "Your credit is no good any more" and patiently explained to him yet again he is President of The United States not The World I won the argument hands down.

Today the link is to an article by the excellent Deborah Orr, a true liberal who is commenting on the persistent whining of the progressive left about public spending cuts in the coalition's budget. The terminally naive "progressive left" are labouring under the misapprehension that the debt funded good times can co on for ever, all the government has to do is keep printing money. Good food, luxury goods, clothes and holidays have been ridiculously cheap for 30 years. That's why the drop in living standards will be tough. All we can do however is brace ourselves and get ready to ride out the storm.

Don't you just love the arrogance of economists and their detatchment from anything remotely resembling reality. They're all scum sucking crackfarts, they really are. Little Nicky Machiavelli has said this many times and here's a mainstream journalist taking up the theme in response to an economics academic who says that anyone who does not have a PhD in economics should not be allowed to express an opinion on the subject as only verrrrrrry highly qualified economists can understand economics.
Very highly qualified economic professors, now let's see, aren't they the people whose crackpot theories dumped up in the shit mess we're in?
Unfortunately politicians are stupid enough to listen to these self worshipping imbeciles, particularly the one who run the US Federal Reserve and who are now advising the Imbecile In Chief Obama to pawn America to loan sharks in order to raise money for "stimulus spending" (aka pork barrel politics).
Ambrose Evans Pritchard, economics writer for The Daily Telegraph says:

Defending Keynes

The name of a great Englishman, John Maynard Keyes, is being trashed by that jug eared steak of piss and racist hater of all things British Barack Obama in attempts to give the failing Obama administration's loonytoons economics a veneer of sanity. Obama's Immigration Blunder

Barack Obama is the most unpopular US President ever at this stage (18 months) into his Presidency and surely he is the most incompetent also. He staggers from one blunder to another, apparently oblivious to the trail of mayhem he is leaving in his wake.
The latest fiasco, even as the President is still juggling the Gulf Oil Spill from hand to hand like a just out of the oven potato a and desperately looking for someone to pass it to he is trying to provoke another, even bigger and potentially more destructive crisis.
The American border state of Arizona has passed a new law to discourage illegal immigrants from Mexico entering the state. "Il Presidente" Obama plans to challenge that law in the US Supreme Court as well as using an exective order (diktat) to bypass Congress and pass a law granting amnesty to ilegal immigrants. The alleged purpose of this is to get in the region of ten million undocumented Latinos into the system and onto the voting register before the November mid term elections when, without an injection of new, Obama friendly voters to the electoral roll Obama is likely to lose control of both the US Senate and house of Representatives. Should that happen he would be a lame duck President unable to pass his legislative programme. Easy to se them why this issue is an even hotter potato than all others currently in play.

Obama's Sacking McChrystal Could Be The Error That Finishes Him

Barack Obama has made many mistakes since he came to power. Here in the USA his popularity is at rock bottom as people increasingly identify him as a vain, egomaniacal man, far too thin skinned in the face of criticism to be a successful leader and prone to bouts of infantile petulance when things are not going his way. His supporters only have one response to any suggestions that he is less than perfect, that the person challenging Obama can only be motivated by his color.
In sacking General Stan. last week Obama confirmed all the criticisms suggesting personality flaws are correct and also in the eyes of many Americans revealed he is quite prepared, as Commander In Chief of the military services to put the lives of soldiers serving in foreign wars at risk by prioritizing the inflation of his his own ego.
While the view in Washington is that:

For the Washington cognoscenti, the appointment of General David Petraeus marked the crescendo of President Barack Obama's Wonderful Week. In firing General Stanley McChrystal, Mr Obama, the ultimate cool cat, was transformed into Mr Angry. The law professor finally became commander-in-chief.
Obama, so the Beltway groupthink goes, turned a lose-lose situation into a political victory by asserting his authority over an insubordinate steely-eyed killer and replacing him with the ultimate warrior-scholar. He showed the doubters he was tough, and he traded up.

While political commentators who disagree with that are thin on the ground Joe Regular - Guy calls it somewhat differently.
In recalling McChrystal back to Washington and humiliating him in such a theatrical way Obama displayed his weakness and lack of leadership ability. The White House also ducked the real problem - a dismal lack of strategy for tackling the Taliban and getting out of Afghanistan without suffering a defeat as humiliating as Viet - Nam. Obama's dysfunctional civilian team in the State Department and in Kabul are responsible for this rather than Gen. McChrystal
. No one would suggest the profane banter of McChrystal and his aides was a smart way to behave, never mind in the presence of an iconoclastic Rolling Stone reporter, but it would not take a very big man to acknowledge these are soldiers serving in a real shooting war. As such they are always likely to let off steam when an opportunity arises. The general is a soldier's who has stood alongside his men in fire fights and is admired by both American and British troops for that. In Iraq while in his 50s, he fought alongside SAS troopers. A man like that forges a bond with the men serving under him that somebody like Obama who has never known military service cannot understand. McChrystal deserved to be disciplined for his immoderate outburst but not humiliated
. Thought the comments of the General and his aides were immoderate and rash they also reflected a deep frustration within the US military in Afghanistan and contained some unwelcome truths about Obama's civilian officials that angered the famously thin-skinned President decidedly uncomfortable. Even so the opinions voiced are hardly controversial. Even the mainstream media in the USA, widely derided for the sycophancy it has always displayed towards the President, has recognized the war is in trouble. Team America, as the General called his inner circle, was a bit dismissive of Obama himself and that cannot have gone down well with the self-obsessed self-regarding Commander In Chief. Even more irritating for Obama must have been the warm words the soldiers had for Hillary Clinton, his Secretary of State, who large numbers of Democrats and even many Republicans now wish had prevailed in 2008.
In appointing General Petraeus to succeed Stanley McChrystal Obama has replaced a man of action, a leader, with a bureaucrat. The sheer weight of numbers deployed in Petraeus' troop surge in Iraq subdued the opposition but at an unsustainable cost to the US Treasury. Now as the occupation force in Iraq is scaled down the tribal and sectarian violence is increasing again.
Hardly what one would call a decisive victory is it?
The situation is rich in irony. Obama won the Democratic nomination on the back of his anti-war rhetoric, now he is prosecuting a war being run by George W Bush's Pentagon chief, Robert Gates, and Bush's Iraq commander, Petraeus. That is not lost on opponents and skeptics. Many said Obama's only qualification for the job was his not being George W Bush. When people find they got a man with most of Bush's faults but without Bush's Americanism they may abandon the ship of hope and change very quickly.

G20 Nations Divided On Deficit Reduction

The G8 and G20 summits of financial leders running simultaneously in Toronto are both revealing deep divisions among governments about how quickly publid spending deficits should be reduced. This has caused uncertainty in financial market jover the past few days, with the American "broow and spend" economists of the Obama administration warning that reducing deficits too quickly will push the economies of developed nations into the double dip recession governments have feared. Leading European economies, particularly the Germans, are emphasising the need to curb government spending, and it is a possibility a G20 communique at the end of the conference will set out a timetable for how far and fast countries should retrench spending. David Cameron, in his first appearance at a world summit as well as undertaking a round of one to one meetings to introduce himself to other world leaders has praised by the Canadian host for his deficit slashing budget earlier this week. The Canadian prime minister, Steve Harper, said that he welcomed Cameron's responsible and difficult decisions, saying the British prime minister's budget "had raised the very fiscal consolidation agenda that we are trying to steer the G20 towards". Canada wants the G20 to endorse the idea that national deficits should be halved by 2013. Ahead of his scheduled meeting with Barack Obama tomorrow Cameron was taking care not to appear to be lecturing other nations, particularly the recklessly spendthrift Obama, on economic policy. The PM also has to gove his American counterpart the hard word on Afghanistan. Cameron said: "We cannot be there for another five years, having been there for effectively nine years altogether."Though this is being reported as not representing a change in policy but to an accountant's precise mind it does not suggest our troops will be active in Afghanistan until 2015. It has been rumoured Cameron speaks in private of starting to scale down the British presence as early as next year. Speaking of global economics, Cameron said: "What I want to achieve, above all, is to get the right outcome for the Britain and the world community. To achieve that nations like Britain with big budget deficits have to move faster than with surpluses." Prime Minister Cameron said that he was not at odds with Obama over whether the leading economies should retain the stimulus that helped to prevent the world sliding into an economic slump in the wake of the banking crisis. "The risk to for Britain lies in not taking action," Cameron said. "I think that the G8 will conclude that those countries with the worst problems need to accelerate their actions, which is what we have done."

Human Genome Data Must Be Protected From Mad Scientists

To people of a certain age the words scientist and mad are wedded as inseparably as ice and cream, fish and chips or crooks and liars. Scientists in fiction were always mad. Obsessive, divorced from reality, concerned only with their own cleverness and never with consequences they were sometimes comic relief, more often the biggest threat to civilisation.
There is something slightly disturbing about the word "science," all sibilants and soft vowels is out to be sensual, saying it should produce a feeling akin to fondling the well rounded buttocks of a beautiful woman who is wearing=ring very expensive silk panties. Beneath that however is something sinister and disturbing, something snake like, something that resembles the Dr. Evil scientist Craig Venter who recently tried to patent the human genome and when it was pointed out that he had only decoded part of it tried to patent the part he was responsible for. What's wrong with that? you might well ask. Well had Venter been successful (the international courts told him to fuck off) it would have meant and gene therapies involving the genes on which he held patents would have earned him massive royalties, One Trillion Dollars he claimed.. And of course, in many parts of the world put those treatments beyond the reach of all but the very rich. Venter is now trying to claim he has created artificial life (he hasn't) and is trying to patent a technique which has been in use for years and will be necessary in delivering the gene therapies now being developed. Resistance is growing to attempts to patent the human genome by this mad scientist and other world domination freaks and greedy fuckers who involuntarily raise their hand palm outwards and put their pinkie to their mouth as they say One Trillion Dollars...

Vince is right, at the Daily Stirrer we only get about 2000 readers a day but we have been warning since we started to publish of the dire state the economy was really in. Labour leaning media organisations are still trying to sell the idea that Gordon Browns bust and bust, borrow and spend economics left the economy in great shape. Even the Conservastive sector of mainstream media has soft peddalled on the true state of the economy. Raising tax and curbing spending was the only available option, Labour commentators who still insist we should have carried on borrown and increasing spending are insane.
The truth is, to be brutally honest, we are up shit creek and the boat is leaking. George Osborne's public spending cuts were necessary and urgent. Somehow public sector spending must be brought under control before Britain's international credit rating is downgraded which will mean the Bank Of England having to pay a higher rate of interest to the organisations that take up the bonds it sells to finance our monthly overspend.
I am not a George Osborne fan but at least he had the guts to face up to the reality Labour could never stomach. At some point the government has to stop spending more than it can earn. It's a no brainer.

The real danger lies in your suggestion Anna that if people can no longer afford to buy a sandwich from Pret a manger they could buy a loaf, a tin of spam and make their own. If people learn to do thinks for themselves again it will expose how few real jobs there are in the economy.

Clean Energy Pipedreams

When JFK was President he launched a project to put a man on the moon by 1969. It was called the Manhattan Project. When faced with plunging poll ratings, ridicule at home and abroad and a nation more horribly divided than it has been since the civil war Obama, ever the great imitator decided to launch his own "Manhattan Project" by publicly stating America would be carbon neutral by 2050. He's talking bollocks of course.
Clean Energy Is A Pipedream
None of the "sustainable power" technologies available or in development so far are capable of producing the amount of power a modern society in a developed nation needs twenty four hours a day, thre hundred and sixty five days a year. The current fad among scientists and politicians is solar power. They seem to overlook the fact that the sun does not shine for half the year (at night) and across most of the world rainy days make another hole in potential power generation time.
Wind is not only useless when the wind does not blow strongly enough to turn the turbines (less than about 10mph) it also does not work when the wind is too strong and when the wind is gusty. There is a very narrow band of wind speeds at which the turbines work at optimum efficiency, most of the time they run well below what is economically viable.
As for biomass, don't even go there. Which leaves waves, tides and marine currents as we have always argued at The Daily Stirrer. And though the technologies in that area are more promising nobody is putting adequate funds into research and the weirdie beardies are already yelling "Save the two toed shrimp."

Nations Mutiny As The Eurozone Unravels

The rebellion against the 1930s fiscal and monetary policies of the Euro-complex is gathering pace.
Il Sole has published a letter by 100 Italian economists warning that the austerity strategy imposed by Brussels/Frankfurt risks tipping Europe into a self-feeding downward spiral. Far from holding the eurozone together, it will cause weaker countries to be catapulted out of EMU. Others will leave in order to restore sovereign control over their central banks and unemployment policies.
On the same day we learned of that we also learn that Angela Merkel's coalition government in Germany is on the brink of collapse as German taxpayers rebel against constantly having to carry the Eurozone basket case economies on their Teutonic shoulders. And Geert Wilders, the right wing Dutch politicians who was banned from entering Britain by Gordon Browns populist authoritarian regime is poised to sweep to power or at least a big share of it because the Dutch voters are also sick of the Euro shenaneghins. Meanwhile Belgium is about to split into two nations, the divisions of this synthesized nation having been exacerbated by economic problems associated with Euro membership.

The Absolute Necessity Of Curbing State Spending

The left, already laughable styling themselves "the opposition" even as Labour splits into tiny factions including the "old left" the traditional party of the working class, the people with traditional Labour values who recognise there are no magical solution, the "progressive left", the kind of people my colleague Ian Thorpe refers to as The Politically Correct Thought Police, who are currently working themselves into a frenzy about the coalition's proposed cuts to public spending that will at least go some way towards bringing the public sector deficits under control and the "power at any price spinmeisters of New Labour, the people who have no idea how to solve the problems but believe during their thirteen years in power they infantilise Labour's core vote sufficiently for them to be able to spin their way out of the abyss by talking of abolishing child poverty and making internet access a human right.
The traditional left can be ignored, they will always be there, sustained by that sector of the Labour constituency covered by the phrase "they'd vote for a dog turn if you pinned a Labour rosette on it.
New Labour can be ignored. They are the dead parrot of politics, a party within a party, political operators completely unencumbered by anything resembling a principle.
This leaves us with the progressive left. Theirs is a siren song that can turn the heads of the feckless who hear meaningless talk of abolishing poverty and imagine a socialist utopia where cash handouts are available on demand, can delude the identity politics players who all too easily convince themselves that racism, homophobia, islamophobia and other completely irrelevant issues are the biggest problems our society faces.
It is the progressive left, the thought police, who are trying to spread fear and panic about the very necessary and urgent spending cuts. Article after article in The Guardian and on left leaning blogs (not that anybody reads those) warns that public spending cuts now will endanger the "recovery."
What recovery? When will these economic illiterates understand that public spending does not grow the economy, it merely grows the deficit. Printing money, which is what Labour were doing for most of their thirteen years in power and what in the guise of quantitative easing they did over the past two years that have exacerbated the damage done by the financial meltdown that followed the bursting of the housing bubble in 2007, is accomplished by selling debt. Running up debts does not grow the economy as this idiot is suggesting (National Debt Is The Money Government Owes Us) and another idiot is arging here (an excuse to shrink the state)
In support of their economically suicidal argument that the state has a bottomless pit of money from which it can keep funding pointless projects and financing futile policies the left likes to cite how Franklyn D Roosvelt's government tacked the great depression by funding huge infrastructure projects in the 1930s. There are a few small, barely significant differences. The first of these is that prior to World War 2 world demand for oil was booming and America at that time was the principal, indeed the only bulk supplier. Second was that vast tracts of the American mid west were undeveloped, still a horse and cart economy. Third was that America had the grain and cattle states of mid west, the great plantations of the south and the farms of the north east and the west coast, a vast agricultural base. America had stuff to sell that the world wanted to buy. We have financial services. America in the 1930s lacked infrastructure. Britain in the second decade of the 21st century does not lack infrastructure. So perhaps Roosvelt's solution is not quite appropriate for our situation.
Basically the advice given by Wilkins Micawber in Dickens' novel David Copperfield is more appropriate to our current situation. Annual income £20, annual expenditure £19.95p; result happiness. Annual income £20, annual expenditure £20.05p; result misery (for pedants I put it in current money terms for our younger readers).
To put it even more simply so that even members of the progressive left can understand, if you keep spending more than you earn sooner or later your creditors call in the debt and then you're in big trouble.

Afghan Surge Hits The Armco

It had to be a bad idea, Barack Obama claimed the credit for thinking it up all by himself.
With allied casualties rising in Afghasnistan and areas the United Nations forces recently claimed to have "liberated" now slipping back towards Taliban domination the much hyped surge sems to have hit the crash barrier. Afghan guerilla fighters are repeating the tactics that have served them well for a thousand years, that of melting away into the hills and desert in the face of superior forces and then regrouping to launch small attacks ('war of the fleas') one the invaders have become entetnched in their positions and thus easy targets for a highly mobile, virtually invisible force.
Will Obama's Afghan Surge Run Into The Sand? asks leftie writer Simon Tisdall. The left are totally out of touch with reality aren't they. He's asking "Will it?" when anyone can see it already has.
The Afghan war was lost from the moment George W Bush launched the invasion in retaliation for the 9/11 attacks. Obama has only shown his weakness and ineptitude as a leader, his ignorance of any history except the fictionalised histories of Black America and British colonialism. As long as this clown and poseur remains in the White House the world will continue to stumble towards permanent low level clutural conflict.

When you get down to it, maybe the way Maths and Science are taught in schools is to blame. Or maybe it is the nerds who teach it and try to infect pupils with their own irrational enthusiasm for the uttrly pointless that has made these subjects so uncool.

Othrodox wisdom held that with the election of a black President, Barack Obama, America would enter a new post racial phase in its development. Unfortunately the much anticipated and hyped Obama effect has been the opposite of what the President's fans predicted. Halfway through Obama's second year in office there is more racial tension, more mistrust and more animosity than there has been at any time in the past 40 years. American officials are searching for Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks in an attempt to pressure him not to publish thousands of confidential and potentially hugely embarrassing diplomatic cables that offer unfiltered assessments of Middle East governments and leaders.
US news reporting and opinion website The Daily Beast reported Assange is a wanted manearlier this week after Wiki Leaks revealed plans to post security related documents stolen by US Army intelligence worker Bradley Manning, a serving soldier. Some of the 260,000 documents contained information that could make United States military installations vulnerable to terrorist attacks or expose the identities of intelligence workers and technical specialists.
Now we may call this blog The Daily Stirrer and we like to stir things up a bit even if than means sometimes giving publicity to some fairly whacky conspiracy theories. It is not our job to tell you what to believe but to make you think about what those in authority want you to believe. Having said that, we deplore the actions of both Bradley Manning and Wiki Leaks in this instance.
Governments, no matter how much we hate the idea, must from time to time get involved in some unpleasant activities. There are many people and organisations in the world only too eager to make life unpleasant for the citizens of rival nation, followers of rival religions or simply for the reason of furthering a political or financial agenda. We cannot expect to be protected from such organisations and then come over all Jane Fonda and start bristling with self righteousness when things get a bit messy.
Wikileaks have been irresponsible before in revealing sensitive information and surely aren't so far up themselves as to think they could keep getting away with it forever. Bradley Manning is a stupid little prick who for the sake of his own ego was prepared to put the lives of colleagues at risk. Those colleagues have parents, wives and children maybe, brothers and sisters, friends. A little twat like Manning, supported by Assange an even bigger twat and a supporter of the self styled "progressive left" who are neither progressive nor liberal but a bunch of evil little Nazi syphilis sores, think their Nazi liberalism (Ve haff vays of making you politically correct) think they can play God.
The Daily Stirrer knows there are a lot of shits employed by the government to do shitty things. Fortunately they usually only do shitty things to equally shitty people working for the other side. Wikileaks and Bradley Manning have not made the task of those people any easier however by spreading fear and panic on behalf of those who seek to disrupt our ways of life by spreading fear abd panic.
When you threatened the human rights of others you forfeit your own human rights. What's difficult to understand about that.

Third Climategate Report imminent - Whitewash manufacturers report sales boom.

If you were planning to do a spot of DIY over the weekend you may encounter a problem – an acute shortage of whitewash in your local store, as it may have been appropriated for more urgent purposes. The estimable Bishop Hill is reporting he has heard on the grapevine that the publication of the third report from the investigation of the scientific fraud known as climategate will be as big a whitewash as the first two.
The previous reports have cleared the suspect scientists of any wrongdoing while admitting their data was wildly inaccurate and the conclusions drawn from the results of their exercises in mathematical modelling bore little relation to the evidence compiled by real scientists who based their research on observations of things that were happening (or not happening) in the real world.
The sad thing about this is the idiots who have tried to make science into a religion, who have relied on mathematical modelling as "evidence" for their theoretical guesswork and assumptions, have destroyed faith in the process of scientific research and development as a tool for solving real problems in the sphere of reality.

Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill - The Tide Turns

It seems that after managing to pass off several weeks of dithering indecision about how to react to the catastrophic oil spill that has resulted from the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, Barack Obama in asking whose arse should he kick has provoked the same reaction from the oil industry and the American voters, "Your own, Mr President." In the end, forced to at least be seen to be doing something Obama announced he was shutting down all offshore drilling activities. With the global appetite for oil and the American economy's appetite for the back stuff increasing at an accelerating rate Obama has decided to take the very worst course of action he could both economically and socially. The economic consequences for America will be dire, Obama might just as well have handed the Arab nations a gun and invited them to point it at America's head. The social consequences for the millions of people living and working in the populous states that have a Gulf shoreline will be even worse with thousands of jobs lost and millions of dollars removed from the local economies. Obama was already the least popular President ever at this stage in his Presidency. Could this finish him and will the Democratic Party allow him to serve out his four year term and be defeated honourably or will they force him to stand down in order to prevent him dragging the party into the abyss with him? Free Gary McKinnon, Jail The Real Criminals

Charlotte Gore blogs "Free Gary McKinnon, I'm Not So Sure An article questioning the veracity of presenting the Aspergers Syndrome affected hacker who broke into U.S. Military computers as nothing worse than a geeky teenager who got a bit carried away.
While I agree with Charlotte's assesment that there is more to McKinnon than we are being told, for example what he did required a higher level of skill than the average "script kiddie" hacker, I still think the response of the U.S. Government is driven more by a ned to lash out at somebody who embarrassed them by exposing the weakness of their much hyped computer security than by a desire to see justice done.
There is a world of difference between Gary McKinnon hacking the Pentagon computers and making US Military Security look like a bunch of clowns (military security a bunch of clowns? Who'd have thought it) and a bunch of shifty, swathy complexioned guys walking into an airport and TWOCing 4 planes.
There is little difference in the criminal incompetence on the part of government employees it took to make both crimes possible.

Now It's No Longer Racist To Bash Barack

This is another of those irritating "We told you so" posts from the writers of The Daily Stirrer. We find ourselves saying "we told you so" quite a lot having predicted how events would unfold. This is not because we are psychic or unusually prescient, it is because we all have a wealth of life experience in roles that involve managing people so we can spot the phoney, identify the skiver and recognize the bullshitter at long range.

It seems only the kool aid drinkers of the Obamessiah cult and silly celebrities like Paul McCartney are still taken in by Obama's 'Hey, you can't call me incompetent, I'm black' routine. People have seen through Obie's Healthcare Bill which will make healthcare more expensive for mid income Americans, put decent care further beyond the reach of poor Americans and channel vast amounts of taxpayers money into the pockets of health insurance providers. His cap and trade initiative to curb carbon emissions is a dead duck. The "scientific" case for carbon based AGW has been exposed as a fraud, built on the pursuit of corporate profits rather than concern for the planet.
The proposed amnesty for illegal immigrants has gone down like a lead zeppelin, so well in fact that while some fear any attempt to drive it through congress using the kind of pork barrel politics that pushed healthcare through will result in civil unrest while other point to the fact that several states have considered secession from the Union if Obama even puts his amnesty to a vote.
All in all then this is one of the most successful Presidencies ever - for America's enemies.

Us old boys all remember being teenagers, the spontaneous embarrassing bulges in trousers, the very real risk of breaking your pyjama trousers walking downstairs, the prurience, the wanking, the porno mags hidden behind the wardrobe, obessive fascination with girlks underwear even though you had not seen what was lurking behind it. The fear that you were some kind of sex maniac that made you so reluctant to talk to anyoby about you worries or ask the questions everybody you knew was bursting to ask an older, more experienced person too.
It was all part of the pain and joy of growing up.

Burning our Money blog shows how in real income terms the botton 25% income wise are now twice as well off as they were in 1961. It does not always seem so as expectations are so much higher but as Wat Tyler says in his post, povery is a very subjective thing. Back in 1961 a decent, warm home, plenty of food in the larder and a few luxuries were enough for most people.
Far from a majority of homes had a telephone, clothes, furniture and household goods were all made to last longer. My family were by no means poor, we had a car and a phone, a fridge and washing machine adorned my parents kitchen (again things we consider necessary now that were far from universal 50 years ago) yet I remember my mother "end to middling bedsheets, that is cutting a threadbare sheet down the middle, hemming it and sewing the former outer edges into a new centre seam.
This was not tight fistedness, it was how most people lived. Extravagance was frowned on. Now of course we live in a throwaway society and so although the inflation adjusted income of the lower quartile has more than doubled relatively people do not see themselves as much better off than their parents.
