What Is The Cause Of Islamic Terrorism And What Isn't The Cause?

Those of us who post online set ourselves a thankless task; of the page views our web stats show we don't know how many are from people who engaged with out work, how many took one look, said WTF and moved on or how many hits are generated by search engine bots and if we bother with comment threads, while some comments provide interesting feedback, many are anodyne, off topic, pointlessly malicious or simply show that the person commenting has not read the article and therefore is commenting only on the title.
Somtimes however, not often but sometimes, we are rewarded when we come across a genuine, fully paid up, card carrying member of the idiots union. Recently, on the Writer Beat site, I found one such writer, a total barmpot, a man so far up his own arse he will only see the light if somebody cuts his throat.
In a post titled "Manchester, May 22 - Decadent Concert - Sick-Minded Terrorism - Capitalist Consequences" Dirk Droll wrote :-
What happened to Muslim lands in the most recent history to prompt this special brand of terrorism? Western colonialism, that’s what. And while the military occupation and “colonization” of the rest of the planet by powerful European nations was originally driven by a mercantilistic form of greed, it soon refined itself into a capitalist form, more efficient, more elegant, better able to hide from view or justify itself with false narratives under a meritocratic veneer — and able to continue its reign long after the age of colonialism had officially ended.
He then went off on a lengthy, anti western, anti - capitalist rant, saying that all the problems we have experienced with Islamic extremism are due to 'economic colonialism'.
My reply was:
"I think the fact that African Christians and shamanistic animists, Syriac Christians, Yazidi Muslims from Iraq and Syria and Shia / Alawite Muslims are not involved in recent terror attacks, that all the incidents in the recent wave of terror attacks are perpetrated by Salafist or Wahhabi Muslims demolishes the central premise of this article, that colonialism is the cause of terrorism."
Oh dear, that really rattled his cage. He came back with :-
[ The two paragraphs cut here consisted of Dirk explaining at length that terrorism is caused by capitalism, before he gets round to answering my point, ]
If you prefer simplistic arguments, let me ask you: if Islam were the one and only cause of the current Islamist terrorism, why is the part that doesn't stay home directed at Western countries? Why not China or Mexico, El Salvador or Vietnam? Some people in our countries did something to draw this ire, and I think I have made a pretty good case who they were and what they did.
This only proves in a verbose way of course that Dirk is so sure of his intellectual superiority he does not feel the need to do any research before embarking on one of his rants. It did not occur to him that I phrased my comment in simple terms because it was obvious that he is not every bright. There are many nations that have no record of being involved in the current wave of 'capitalist' wars that have been hit by Islamic extremist acts of terrorism. But as he did not get the message, here are just a few examples:

In one article I noticed, somebody else who does not bother with research or verification (or suffers from a similar deficiency of critical thinking skills,) asked the rather redundant question, "Why Doesn't Terrorism Affect China The Way It Does USA, UK, India, Euope." I would have thought the answer to that is obvious. Always eager, however, to help those less well informed than myself or so myopic they can't see what's staring them in the effic face, I offered this, from the left leaning UK newspaper The Independent: China executes ‘terrorists’ in Muslim province of Xinjiang.
Whether that works better than the appeasement policies of European and North American governments we cannot know because we get to know very little of what is really going on in China.
Clearly the statement that Islamic terror is only directed at the nations that have taken an active role in recent middle east conflicts is totally false, as could easily have been verified with a little research. This is why I do not like comment threads, a certain amount of effort goes into composing even a short factual article, not just in terms of writing and planning, there is also the time that should be spent providing at least some verification for what we say (opinion is different, unless the author is one of the multitude happy to present their idiosyncratic opinions as facts.
And of course we must not forget that the Kurds and Yazidi, Syriac ans Armenial Christians, the Shia in Syria and Iraq, Egypts Coptic and Ethiopian Christians and middle eastern Jews have all suffered at the hands of ISIS, so as I stated the premise of the original article was demolished by my comment. The lesson Dirk droll shoulfd (but will not) take from this is that verbosity is not a substitute for intelligence and being opinionated is not the same as being informed.
